Personality:
Altruistic | Intrusive | Conformist | Reserved | Pragmatic | Solicitous | Indecisive
Maia is very altruistic in nature and wants to be able to help whoever she can, even if the help is unwanted or unneeded. Growing up in such a large family leaves little in the way of privacy, and while she understands the concept of personal space, she can still come off as a little nosy or even overbearing without even realising it. She enjoys being around people just as much as she enjoys being alone and finds it important that she finds the time to self-reflect and improve. She is both mature and rather reserved for her age, and so often got along better with the elders in her village while deep down she wants more friends closer to her age. Because she was raised in such an environment of stability and organisation, Maia is more close minded and conservative than most and does not accept change easily as she finds it hard to adapt.
She is both compassionate and cooperative and will always try to get along or agree with others, making her almost passive to a fault as she chooses to avoid conflict where she can. Because of this, she tends to keep her own emotions bottled up as not to trouble others and must learn that it is alright to voice her own opinion. Maia thrives best in an environment of harmony and cooperation and finds difficulty in expressing herself otherwise.
Maia also has a strong sense of moral obligation and so while working, she is both meticulous and hardworking, and strives to complete all her tasks with efficiency and accuracy. During her down times however, she prefers a more leisurely and relaxed pace and can often be found napping during breaks. As a very clean and organised person, she is also often cleaning or doing chores (both her own and others’) in her spare time.
Due to her indecisiveness, it often takes Maia a while before settling on a decision. Because she overthinks most (if not all) of her choices, this leaves her both inflexible and unable to efficiently adapt in situations calling for an immediate response. Even after making a decision she tends to second-guess whether or not she made the right choice, which then leaves her blind to new oppurtunities as she stresses over past. This insecurity stems from her childhood as she wants to make the best choice possible that doesn't burden anyone else. As of current, her biggest worry is whether or not leaving her family was the correct path for her to take.
History:
Maia was born as the fourth and youngest to a family living in a seaside village. In addition to her immediate family, she lived together with her aunt and uncles, many cousins, and grandmother, and together they ran a modest oyster farm in the nearby ocean. Due to the working hours of the farm, her parents would leave early morning and return in the evening, leaving most of her upbringing to her grandmother's hand. Instead of going to the communal school in the village over, she was home schooled by her grandmother along with her cousins more out of convenience than choice. To pass the time during the day, she would often go fishing with her cousins that had not reached working age, (or at least watch them fish). As the years passed, one by one her cousins and siblings went to work in the fields, and so Maia resigned herself to looking after her aging grandmother who, though old and frail, was a strong woman with something to say about anything and everything. As most children would do, Maia kept her mouth shut and instead opted to listen to whatever she said, prompting her when necessary.
Even after reaching working age she frequently stayed home to tend to her grandmother, and also to cook and clean- both of which she enjoyed immensely. While she didn't mind helping out at the farm, it wasn't something she truly wanted to be doing but rather what was expected of her, seeing as everyone else in the family was doing so. However, without any aspirations of her own, she continued to work at home while helping out at the farm here and there for several years. When her grandmother inevitably passed, staying home without as many duties almost seemed like a waste of time when she could be out on the farm working with the rest of her family, and so for the next few months that’s where she spent most of her days.
One night while sorting out the family mail, she came across a colourful leaflet advertising what looked like a town looking for residents and workers. Suddenly remembering her strong-willed grandmother and the many years she spent listening to her tales, Maia was overcome with the urge to make a life for herself. She wasn’t deserting her family by any means, but rather, wanted to see more of the world and find her life’s calling. Although another small town could potentially be no different to her current village, it was still a place to start- and most importantly it was her decision to do so. With the flyer carefully tucked away in her pocket, she spent many days working up the courage to even bring up the subject of moving out on her own.
Once known, they were more than supportive and rather relieved that she finally seemed to be finding her own path in life. Several phone calls and days later, Maia was on her way to the quaintly named Toffee Town.
Misc:
- The two pearls Maia wears were gifts from her mother and father as she departed the village- they shine with a luminosity that seems to come from within. While working in the baths she carefully sets them aside as not to lose them in the water.
- She has two older brothers and one older sister.
- Adores warm places and warm weather. She's rather sensitive to the cold- especially cold water.
- She wears stirrup socks so her feet can breathe and won't get soggy while working in the bathhouse, all while staying warm! Same with her finger-less gloves.
- Doesn't like alcohol for the taste, and is also quite lightweight.
- Favourite dish is plain steamed rice because, "Anything can go with rice!"
- Can doze off while standing up, but can't fully fall asleep.
- Unable to receive a gift without giving something back to the gifter due to how her grandmother raised her.
- Tends to easily hurt herself if deeply engrossed in work- A reason why she didn't like working in the oyster farm. Sharp oysters resulted in many cuts.
- While she can't help but think the fleeting nature of flowers are so wasteful, she very much enjoys them for their beauty.
- Loves fishing but can never seem to catch anything. In the end perhaps she likes the fish more than the fishing.
- Her shoes (sandals??) are zipped up from behind.
- Is lactose intolerant- dairy gives her tummyaches and the runs.
- Flatter than a board- she still believes they’ll grow in one day. (LOL)
- She loves her family dearly and frequently travels back to her home village to visit - at least once every season.
- Tends not to use contractions while talking and only does so when she’s nervous or in an otherwise stressful environment.
