Ah, they had to be nice - you were a paying guest! In truth, I think people are pretty mixed the world over - some are friendly, some not so much. On the whole though I'd say English people tend to be a bit reserved, certainly until they get to know you.

You're right of course. It is difficult to put all people in the one basket. I did notice that the people seemed friendlier the further I went away from the cities. No one was ever rude to me.

The people of Oatley used to be very friendly. I'd always say "G'day" to everyone I met when I was out walking. Now, half of the people barely acknowledge you. They are too busy on their phones. The ethnic mix has also changed.

That sounds exactly like the UK now - interesting! We've been trying to move for the last year now simply because I'm fed up with amount of people everywhere round here (you struggle to park in the town centre) and their general rudeness, arrogance and disinterest - it used to be a lovely little market town when we first moved here nearly 24 years ago now. I'm hoping to move to somewhere with a more village-feel and countryside views (I long to see fields and greenery!) But, after a year and in this current unsettled climate of Brexit, it's looking less and less likely now.

Everything is changing, but Oatley still has  that "village" atmosphere. Luckily there are many parks and bush reserves. I hope it stays that way!
