Description Skyward Sword Link's Master Sword~

I was going to skip making the blade (I know, blasphemy...), because of time restraint. Though at this point, I'm really happy I took the chance, because it turned out great. This is my third blade constructed, first double-edge type.

I was able to make the handle, which is rolled up cardboard, because I didn't have anything in that shape kicking around the house. Both top and bottom circular shapes, and the blade itself. I used a dowel running along the middle for added strength to keep it straight, otherwise everything is made out of cardboard again~

The edge is extremely clean, to the point that I'm not sure if it's too sharp for con regulations. It's about as thin as a layer of a cereal box (worst is I give people paper cuts?), but at least I have the scabbard. So I can keep it sheathed until events like the Masquerade, or photoshoots. It's about 47.5" long, from blade tip to handle end.

I'll be working on the wings tonight, and triforce insignia, add padding to the handle, the string, then finished! Wooo~!

I have descriptions under a few photos in my gallery on how this was made. It should be under "Progress/Zelda WIP folder", if you had specific questions on parts, I can answer that a lot better than generic ones.

Where did you get the cardboard if you don't mind me asking?

Cereal boxes is the bulk of my thin cardboard materials (honestly, I'll recycle anything that comes my way). For corrugated stuff, I use the shipping boxes from my work, that we normally throw out. You should never have to buy any, unless you want one large flat piece, then the dollar store is your friend.

Aww, I really appreciate the words! Thank you!

I'd be happy to help, if you needed to ask any specific questions on construction. There's plenty of ways to make them!

Thank you! I will definitely do! I will try to make my own shield and master sword for my brothers cosplay, but first I'm trying to make Zelda's Rapier out of expanding foam, so I really hopes it will work to!

Your rapier is looking really great! I've never used expanding foam, does it carve nicely? Easy to use? I was always worried it wasn't strong enough, because the blade is frail when thinned, but yours seems to have a very nice shape~

Well, I found an rather good tutorial by Kamui (perhaps you know her?) who makes her WoW weapons all out of cardboard, wood and expanding foam. You can view it here .

It helped me a lot to understand how to make weapons from expanding foam. Like, for example, to use a wooden or cardboard base in the shape of your weapon, so you can trace it while cutting. It looks rather difficult to cut, but with a good and sharp knife you can cut it very easily. And most important: When your doing something wrong, you can always add more foam and cut again

Oh yes! Someone else said amazing things about Kamui! I heard she was very helpful, and informative! Thank you for the link to her site~

Aww, all your info is really helpful, thank you so much. I love hearing what other people do too. It sounds like a very useful medium, since you can fix mistakes fairly easy. Is it a bit pricey? I'm trying to learn how to make wooden props this year, because we have so much locally, but it takes forever to carve, haha.

I also want to make some swords out of wood, because of the support they have But the problem is, they don't let you in on conventions here in the Netherlands if you have a wooden sword So I had to find an other way to work around this problem xD It's not pricy at all, I paid for one tube of expanding foam for about 8 euro's ( i guess 5 dollars) and I used not even a quarter of it When you spray it with water after you used the foam, it will expand even more

That's very cool!

I think, quite a few conventions don't allow wooden props, but fortunately our locals ones do. As long as we're not being immature with them (play fighting, or hitting others), I don't think they'll get banned. However, anything with metal, is strictly against the rules, even in the Masquerade & contests. D: They've been pretty nice about metal armour however.

how did you make the rise in the card bored for the double edge blade?

Just add cardboard inside~ Have it slanted in a diamond'ish shape, so the sides connect cleanly.
