Name: Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus)
Location: near rivers in Brazilian / Amazonian rainforests
Size: 100 cm long body, 140 cm wingspan weight: 2 kg
Diet: fruit, nuts, coconuts, seeds, but also small animals
Conservation status: Endangered
Interesting facts: Hyacinth macaw is the biggest parrot on Earth | hyacinth macaw can live 80 years! | those parrots live in pairs or in small groups. They usually have two or three babies and parents care for them for five months | the amazing colour of their body almost killed those amazing and wonderful macaws. Humans were hunting hyacinth macaws to sell them, as many collectors were ready to pay crazy amounts of money just to gain one of these parrots. Fortunately, some special program was started and now native people gain more money, when they show Hyacinth macaws to tourists in the nature, so they have no reason to catch and sell those magical birds

Gorgeous...I used to be an apprentice of a bird breeder. She had Amazons, Caiques, you name it. She also had 4 hyacinth macaws. We hand fed the babies, and treated the parents with love. Very large parrots, but it was so great working with them. It makes me sad that other Hyacinth macaws were sold in the black market and mistreated when the bird fad started.

Beautiful shots of the Royalty of Parrots.
They are amazing birds. It's not easy to see just how big they truly are until you see one beside the more common Blue & Gold or Greenwings Macaws.
They are Macaw and so can be incredibly loud at times...
and they can be rather destructive too with the typical parrot need to chew & shred. Watching one defty split open a Palm nut is a very impressive display of what it can do with it's beak.
I've only met a few of these regal giants, but so far every one has been extremely gentle and quite affectionate.
Yes, they command Top dollar from breeders - $20grand US or more.
