Description
A prototype of Moderus Gamma driving across the Theatre Bridge in Poznań.
Moderus Gamma LF 01 AC was the first example of a new, fully low-floor tram, produced by Moderus SA works in Biskupice. It was first presented in November 2016, then later that month it was sent to Poznań to be displayed publicly during the St. Catherine's Day. In February 2017, Gamma started trials on Poznań tram network. Later that year, in May, it carried its first passengers, after it was integrated with Poznań electronic tickets system. The new tram was praised for its comfort (i.e. it is fitted with USB sockets for charging electronic devices) and innovative design, attracting the attention of tramspotters.
Already in January 2017, orders for production-run Gammas were made, and the new trams - fifty in total - were delivered between October 2018 and July 2019. Their delivery allowed MPK Poznań, the company responsible for the tram network and rolling stock, to retire the oldest trams still in active service, the Duwag GT8 (aka "Helmut").
The new tram also attracted attention of other cities, among them Gdańsk, Wrocław, Olsztyn, and the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Area. The latter has already received several single-car units (since certain routes in USMA are too narrow and have too sharp curves to accept longer trams), whereas Gdańsk and Wrocław have had the prototype Gamma test-driving on their tram network, and the latter has already ordered 25 trams.
Because of its look and unusual, deep blue livery (as opposed to the usual green-and-yellow of the Poznań trams), the prototype Gamma received several nicknames, such as Lord Vader or Pendolino (after the high-speed trainset, known as PKP-class ED250 in Poland).
