Description There are quite a few corvid species native to North America, including crows, ravens, jays, magpies and a nutcracker. Most corvids are extremly intelligent, social birds that are surprising biologists with new discoveries of their problem solving and learning skills.Β  Many corvid species are excellent mimics - a Common Raven at Horizon Wings can switch between two different peoples' voices perfectly while mimicing the same phrase .

Far from plain black birds, many corvids with black feathers, such as the American Crow and Common Raven, have subtle iridescence to their feathers which shine in blue and purple. Magpies often look plain black from a distance, but in the right light, their feathers shimmer with brilliant green and blue, and even bits of red on the tail. Jays are best known for their brilliant blue plumage, such as the common Blue Jay, and the western Steller's Jay.

Clockwise from top left: Black-Billed Magpie, Common Raven, Steller's Jay, Blue Jay, and American Crow.

This is wonderful! You do all of them a great justice. Corvids are some of my favourite critters. I lived for many years in Northern Arizona, up in the mountainous high desert of Flagstaff. Ravens, crows and Steller's Jay were everywhere. I could sit for hours watching the ravens and listening to their conversations and musings.Β

I love Steller Jays....I made a griffon of one after looking up some ideas and now I have seen about 3 of them on walks. Β It seems hard to find blue jays though, especially given how bright they are.....or maybe I just don't know where to look

It depends on where you live. Blue Jays are very common in the central U.S and east, but not found in the west. If you live in a place with Steller's Jays, you likely won't see Blue Jays. This map shows their range - www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bl…

Oh, I didn't know...that is helpful, thanks . I thought I saw a blue jay once in B.C before during camping awhile back, but never since that time.

This is beautiful! I love corvids, all my favorite birds in one place! The feathers are so detailed, they all look amazing and I love the iridescence sheen on the magpies tail.

I love all these birds. I have some photos of a few of them I have yet to put on my DA. I've seen most of these around the west coast and central US in years past. I have observed some of the corvid species in my spare time and found they are amazing at mimicking other sounds.

Corvids are incredible.
I love the composition here, & the way you've painted the iridescence of their feathers.

There's a few North American species I wasn't able to fit on here - I wanted to keep it to five 'main' species.

I have looked on Wikipedia at the birds. The common Raven is also in my country.
But it is a pity that the Blue Jays are not in my country. He is a very beautiful bird and I love blue.
Magpie is also a nice bird and luckily there are in my country a representative of the genus, itΒ΄s the Eurasian magpie.
I think that it is smaller than the Black-Billed Magpie. One thinks he is only black and white but it is not so. It shows here in your picture.
You used beautiful colors and show the beauty of the birds. Also respectfully, you painted the ravens really well done. I think it is not easy to paint a black bird.

I always grew up around the stellar jay, and while annoying while camping, I always thought they were beautiful. Then I moved to where blue jays live and could understand why so many liked their looks. Also annoying, but also pretty
