Some recent art of my character, Halsien.
--
Name: Halsien
Age: 21
Height: 6'1 / 187 cm
Birthday: TBA
Class: Ice Wizard
Occupation: Researcher (Field)
Hometown: Lith Harbour
PERSONALITY
Halsien may initially come across as a quiet, polite but relatively guarded person; he's not exactly the type to start a conversation on his own accord and prefers to have some space.
But he isn't necessarily a cold individual either, it just takes some time for him to get used to your company.
Those who do know him pretty well suggest that he has a soft-hearted, loyal nature.
Contrary to what you'd expect, Halsien actually does have a reckless/adventurous trait under his calm composure; much like his younger self, which is mostly demonstrated when he's off studying monster species in their natural habitats.
OTHER FACTS:
[Best qualities] He's a dependable friend especially when things get rough, he's able to approach situations in a controlled calm manner which eases the tension on everyone else.
He'll also go to lengths to protect everyone as best he can because he really cares about them.
[Worst qualities] Closed off at first and slow to trust, in other words, unreadable. Even if he's committing to doing a favour, it's hard to know what he's feeling or whether he's being his true self deep down.
Despite the unfazed, 'everything-is-under-control' aura he gives, he's reluctant to show any signs of being vulnerable: both to opponents and close friends. He's hesitant to drop his guard under most circumstances because he doesn't want to have to go through being taken advantage of again— even if he's actually scared or uncertain deep down.
This can lead to any friendly relationships starting off a little distant on his end... though his true character, after setting his 'barrier' aside is definitely warmer.
BACKSTORY
[PART I]
Halsien was enrolled in a place called Ellinel Magic Academy, and at first, class was as usual: you'd take magic-related units such as Introduction to Runes, Foundations to Elemental Magic, Beginner alchemy and more.
One day, their teacher assigned everyone a research assignment where they'd have to go to a certain region and prepare a 'show and tell' of their findings Halsien was assigned a rocky, arid land called Perion; and he soon finds himself climbing up a rocky cliff with sturdy ladders, before running into a brilliant coloured, griffin by the name of Horus (this is a boss borrowed from the game MapleStory 2)
The griffin is fairly skeptical at first, as it holds firm distrust towards adventurers because they would always steal, hunt and poach their eggs. Horus notices the staff in Halsien's pocket, so it rears up onto its haunches in warning, but Halsien frantically reassures that he's not going to hurt it.
So how does he convince it?
He takes the staff and chucks it over the side of the cliff.
A reckless act, but to Halsien, it was a sign of trust, because without his staff, he's unable to cast any kind of offensive magic at his skill level so he's essentially unarmed.
Being the young bookworm he is, he's read all about these mythical legends and their stories, so he's aware of Horus's situation and how their kind is on tense relations with the rest of the villagers
So, he asks if there's anyway to help; which leaves Horus puzzled.
Trusting for now that the boy had no ill-intent, he says that he can help rebuild his nest.
Horus eventually comes back to not only find the materials being brought back for the rebuild, but the entire nest was completed by the boy.
They're taken slightly aback when Halsien responds that it's so that they and their future chicks can live happily in a safe home.
Horus is somewhat touched by this act of unexpected kindness from a human, and wishes to give something back in return, and insists that Halsien would stay until he did (despite him running late for class)
He does so by allowing the boy to touch his golden crest; as they're engulfed in bright light, and in the moments afterwards nothing else seemed to be different.
Horus describes it as a 'gift'. They note each other's name and the day soon comes to a close.
And the next day, Halsien finds that he has sprouted a set of tiny wings.
[PART II]
Waking up to quite an unexpected surprise, Halsien heads to class and is excited to tell his classmates at the academy about everything that had happened
but they're certainly not quick to believe.
Especially when a girl called Merevylnn catches word of this.
All the students naturally step aside as she approaches.
"Hey, you. What's the big fuss, and why don't I know about it?"
Merevylnn spoke with a sharp, self-centred tone.
Halsien figures that she hadn't heard and begins to explain
but the girl is anything but pleased.
She rolls her eyes at him in disbelief, labelling him and his story outrageous. Then she notices the wings on his back.
"Those weird things on your back, are really starting to piss me off."
Merevylnn thinks the wings are just accessories, simply for show or looking cool, so she says she should just pull them off.
Halsien is tugged harshly by the wings leaving him to sob even when he pleadedfor her to stop but this just angers her even more. Halsien's hurt crying is deemed as nothing more than an act to make her look bad.
These events eventually escalate into a major misunderstanding between his classmates, Merevylnn and himself.
After the encounter with Horus, Horus had granted him a slight boost in magic prowess, which only led to more evidence for Merevylnn to say that he was showing off, and gain the support of her classmates to go against Halsien.
As things go on, he's treated much like an outcast, completely shunned by his cohort all because of a twisted misunderstanding.
But as time passes, he comes to a realisation, as painful as it is, he knows he needs to find a way to adapt.
If his classmates aren't willing to have anything to do with him, why not just retreat into your books?
Focus on the class material, indulge in your favourite tales. You don't need to have anything to do with anyone either.
This became a routine, and all felt reasonably well.
Until the final exam.
Not done with her schemes out of frustration and almost envy, Merevylnn takes her grudge further and sneakily discovers a forbidden magic spell that has the power to temporarily disable or cancel out magic; a magic cancellation spell.
In truth, Merevylnn had failed a year and had to be kept back. Out of spite, she wants to give Halsien a taste of their own medicine by casting such a spell on him just before the exam.
He's unable to do anything, no demonstration, no small puff of smoke or a drip of ice. Nothing would be casted. And he'd fail, despite his hard-at-work commitments.
After further investigation, and very difficult convincing to the tutors that something had happened, Halsien is able to graduate to highschool; but only after a supplementary exam and consideration for the mysterious magic cancellation spell.
But things aren't the same for a very long time...
