I saw this piece as a foreboding prototype for Apple. As hybrid utensils, this four-piece set of machined iSpork flatware is an exploration into the theme of technological dehumanization. Like most aspects of our lives, I unfortunately see meal times as one of the last sacred communal human rituals inexorably earmarked for technological overhaul too.

I guess I did not realize how popular these would wind up being, so I would just like to say thank you to everyone who has posted a kind reply to them and to the 2 DA members responsible for making them the DD today (I just figured out what that meant, lol) Thank you so much for your interest in them! I'll try to address some of the questions people have had but forgive me if I don't get to everybody.

Yes, sort of, this isn't a painting or a 3D digital model. I mean, you can physically touch them, thay exist, but they don't really work; think of them more as a demonstration model or a mock-up. I made them as an art project, but there is no actual "Apple iSpork" or anything like that...so far as I know

nice design, but listening to music is another form of human interaction, expression + reception=communication. Though i'd never ever prefer to lose the art of conversation at dinner time and am often saddend by all the ipods on the subway that limits the opportunity for interaction, i do not see these pieces as necessarily negative or foreboding, like most technology there is a positive use and a negative use. The positive could be combining a beautiful work of music with a beautiful work of culinary art, the negative would be droning out to ignore your family/friends instead of proactively looking for a new synesthetic experience. Like with a hammer you could build someone a house or crack their skulls, there is nothing inherently bad or negative about these inventions either, it's all in the use.

Very thoughtful contribution, thank you. I think it is fair to say that when I made these pieces I was focusing a lot on the negativity surrounding them, at least that was my initial inspiration for creating them; as a criticism. However, with hindsight comes clarity and time to reevaluate things, which means that I probably see what your saying now better then I ever could have at their inception. I am very glad to see that they are still inspiring some quality analysis though, I have been overjoyed and humbled by the ongoing reaction I have been getting from them.

Considering that it was kind of a "F*CK YOU!" gesture towards Apple, I don't know if they would appreciate it properly...most likely they'd send me a legal notice warning me to not engage in any future trademark infringements of their logo.

No, no, I think you misunderstand. I don't disagree with the possibility of it becoming a product - I have a firm belief that technology is a good thing and that abandoning anything that could be preserved as tradition is much better than staying as primal as we can be. I find it wholly more selfish to request a person abandon something that makes them happy, even at the dinner table, for one person's own sake - Much more selfish that to market away another's personified conversation in indecent corporate plugging. I'd much prefer your dinner is manufactured by Apple and your table from IKEA than as to enjoy your meal less if it weren't.
