Time for a proper painting again. This is Verreaux's Eagle, Aquila verreauxii. In Afrikaans it is called a 'witkruisarend' or 'white-rumped eagle'. The white rump continues into a Y-shaped extension over the shoulders. This is one of Africa's largest eagles. It usually lives and hunts around rocky hills, where its favourite prey are hyraxes, small rabbit-like hoofed mammals that are actually closer related to elephants! Verreaux's eagles make good use of the updrafts created by warm air rising upwards from the rocky hills, to soar high, almost not needing to beat their wings at all, from where they can try to spot their prey. When an eagle spots a hyrax, it will drop down low and try to sneak up on it, flying very rapidly along the mountain side and trying to grab it with its powerful claws. Acrylic painting.
