Are you quoting Charlemagne or Sean Connery in The Last Crusade?

Aw, shoot! Sean Connery...I've always been curious where that quote came from, was it The Song of Roland?

It is said that the Australians are a smart-alecky lot, who often refuse to give folk a straight answer!

Google tells me that it's from Charlemagne and that Connery's character quotes it in "The Last Crusade'. Google could undoubtedly tell me more.

Okay, good! That's where I'm puzzled; Charlemagne was King of the Franks, later crowned Emperor, I know that, but I'm not familiar with any literary work called Charlemagne! and you've never heard of it, either?

Connery probably made it up, like the mad Scotsman he is! Thanks anyway...I'm signing off for the night!
..."Rocks and trees," forsooth!

No - google says it's an actual quote from Charlemagne - and google is always right . . . sometimes.
