Boulderpaw's brow furrowed as he took the a polearm prototype from Laika, the crafter looking all too giddy to see how this turned out. The vanguard apprentice looked confused more than anything, not even sure how to really take hold of the weapon without having the free movement with his paws. Holding it in his jaw was awkward. Way too awkward. If he found a way to make the weapon work though, more cats might use it. Laika was also very insistent.
He looked at the target ahead of him, a pretty simple mock dummy made with some misshapen logs. Finding his footing and grounding himself, he shook his head a couple times to see where the balance would be. Er... yeah this thing definitely was going to be weird to test out. Shifting his weight into his hindlegs he brought his forepaws down; his head jerked and the blade head lurched forward, the force of the swing causing the weapon's shaft to bend. And bend, and bend... The weapon changed position in his mouth as it moved, the blade wasn't facing the dummy but the flatside of the head was.
His eyes shut close in quick panic as he heard the wood splinter, followed by a loud snap.
"Woah!" They spoke in unison, Boulder hissing and Laika squeaking.
He peeped one eye open to find that his paws had instinctively let go of the weapon, looking around to find the polearm head his eyes snapped to a grey shape on the ground, still intact. Well, at least the head could probably just get put on another pole to be tested again. The remains of the pole were laying in scattered bits on the ground, the way they were positioned made it seem like the pieces were running away from him..
The vanguard apprentice gathered the remains of the weapon prototype, quietly while the crafter apprentice scribbled some notes.
"Sorry dude." Boulderpaw stared at the weapon shaft that was now in pieces and in his paws, unable to fully grip them. There was too much heft into the blow, the wrong part of the weapon was used, he couldn't really even hold it right... "Don't worry about it! I think you're onna the first ones to try it out. Maybe we need to use more durable wood? Onwards to more testing!" Laika beamed, grinning ear to ear. "That's what this is all about anyways. We need to know how it not works just as much as how it should work. Can't know what makes or breaks something till you try it out yaknow?" He eagerly had another prototype ready for the vanguard to take from his paws, and to make more progress. "Maybeee swing a little less harder this time though?"
