Character Notes
Bea is a woman who will not be pushed around. She has found her niche in life as a humanitarian - for as respectable of an appearance she portrays, many who first meet her are caught completely by surprise to find she is the keeper of a "whorehouse." There is no nonsense in The Parlor, and she conducts business better than most of the entrepreneurs in Washington. That's what she considers herself first and foremost - a business woman.

Bea is the kind of woman who will first ask you why you're at her doorstep and upon looking you over thoroughly, will politely invite you inside for tea. She's stately and dignified - everything she does is with purpose and grace. An elegant sight to be sure. She doesn't care what you think about herself and her prostitutes. The Parlor is a safe haven for young women out west, and most of the girls only do what duties they wish. If they only wish to perform on stage, than they may. Bea lets them choose whether they want to let clients into their rooms at night. For many of them, Bea is the best thing that has ever happened to them: for the first time, they have 3 square meals a day, a decent wage, and relative freedom to do as they wish. Bea is a community leader, despite the taboo that goes with her line of work.

Bea herself is not a soiled dove - at least, not anymore. She started The Parlor in Benton because of her time as a prostitute. It was the worst time of her life, and she knew many other women suffering in the same way as her. When she was 23, she went through a traumatic abortion that has since left her infertile. This was the darkest point in her life and she knew hers was a situation that happened far too often. So she made a place that was a refuge for girls that reminded her of herself. Now, Bea stays behind the scenes, every so often appearing downstairs to mingle with guests purely for networking purposes. She is always very regal in appearance and has an air about her that commands respect.

At the moment, it's obvious she and Lew Paine have a thing for each other. It would be nice if someone told them that. They will tell you and each other that they're merely good friends, but time will only tell. They get along TOO swimmingly to remain that way, most think.
