Devin Haney and Regis Prograis came face-to-face for the first time in fight week – signaling the countdown is on to their blockbuster battle for the WBC World Super-Lightweight title at Chase Center in San Francisco on Saturday night, live on DAZN PPV in North America and on DAZN worldwide.
Tickets have being flying as elite boxing ends a lengthy absence from the Bay Area, and there was no better spot than the famous Golden Gate Bridge to better signify the massive night ahead for both men.
Unbeaten Haney is looking to bridge the five-pound gap between the Lightweight division he left behind holding all the belts, and the 140lb division he seeks to rip the WBC belt from ruler Prograis and become a two-weight King in his first pro fight on home turf.
Defending champion Prograis has no intention of surrendering the green and gold though, and the New Orleans man is in no mood to let Haney reach the other side where the unification battles that ‘Rougarou’ craves are waiting.
Haney and Prograis will face-off two more times ahead of Saturday’s action, and fans can watch both the press conference and the weigh-in live on Matchroom’s YouTube channel – but can get even closer to the action on Friday lunchtime, with free entry to the weigh-in at Chase Center on Friday, with information on how to get tickets to be released tomorrow morning (Wednesday).
Haney moves up from 135lbs having become undisputed champion last June after beating George Kambosos Jr in Australia, then successfully defending his crown twice - one of those against one of the contemporary greats Vasiliy Lomachenko in a controversial unanimous decision win.
Prograis puts his WBC title on the line for the second time after successfully navigating a first defence against Danielito Zorrilla in April. "Rougarou" became a two-time holder of this belt in November by knocking out Jose Zepeda in Carson and returns to California to face the former undisputed lightweight king.
As desperately as fans want to believe this fight is going to be one for the ages, that's not how we see it playing out. This matchup gives us a classic boxer vs puncher dynamic, as has been the case quite often lately in some of the sport's biggest fights.
Haney is a skilled counter-puncher who prioritises defence and has come under criticism for not taking many risks in the ring. Prograis is an old-fashioned bruiser who is one of boxing's best finishers. The question is can the 34-year-old super-lightweight champion prove a match for his younger, more athletic adversary?
Prograis had trouble cutting off the ring against the rangy Zorrilla, almost losing his WBC title in Louisiana earlier this year. The real issue there is Zorrilla isn't nearly as adept as Haney, so if Regis isn't able to force his opponent to fight on the inside then this one could be a dud. The New Orleans-native cannot get sucked into following Devin around the ring in search of angles that will allow him to turn this into a firefight. He needs to operate smarter than that.
Sadly, we don't think he'll come close to outthinking Haney, failing to cut off the ring effectively enough to make it uncomfortable for the man stepping up five pounds. Haney isn't going to fight a lot, but Prograis won't force the action enough to win the majority of rounds either.
Haney isn't a heavy enough puncher to stop Prograis for the first time in his career, plus the KO price is too short to even entertain considering how he hasn't knocked out any of his opponents for four years. Although the odds for this fight aren't great, they're like that for a reason - because the most likely outcome is exactly how this one is going to play out.
