Description Chapter 3 ~ A Challenge

There they were, standing in front of Viridian City, looking at it. Fred had never been anywhere away from Pallet Town; and was blown away by it. It was similar to Pallet; small houses, a nice atmosphere, and laid back residents. However, it was much bigger, and also had a Gym. Fred looked at the Gym; it wasn't what he expected it to be like at all. It was run down, and seemed very empty. Nobody was there; it was just deserted.

“Yeah… we don't have a Gym Leader anymore. We haven't had one for a couple of years, but one person keeps on coming here every so often to battle challengers. He sort of acts like a Gym Leader, but doesn't battle much. Anyways, you should come with me,” Cassie said to Fred whilst walking towards her house. Fred looked away from the Gym, and began to follow her, with Growlithe by his side. As they walked, Fred constantly looked around; taking in everything that was here. It was picturesque, except for the Gym of course. They arrived at the house, and she grabbed the door knob, before turning back to Fred.

“Oh, you're not allowed Pokémon in the house, so Growlithe will have to go into the Pokéball. Shoes off as well,” She said to Fred as she opened the door, who stroked Growlithe before returning it to the Pokéball for the time being. They both took off their shoes, and entered the house. Fred seemed a bit reluctant to enter the house; he almost felt like he was an intruder rather than a guest. There was no reason for him to feel like this; maybe it was just a sense of paranoia. As he stood there wondering whether he was intruding, Cassie walked up the stairs. She went to get her Pokéball, and quickly came back, holding it in her hand.

“Right, is it correct that you've never battled other Pokémon before?” Cassie asked Fred whilst holding her Pokéball close to her.

“Yeah, that's right. I need to test out Growlithe in battling.” He replied, looking down at his Pokéball.

“Okay, you're coming with me. We're going to train in the wild”

“Cool, what are we waiting for then? Take me to where we'll battle!”

From there, both of them left the house, and Fred once again released Growlithe from the Pokéball. They began to move away from Viridian, back towards Pallet Town. After the rain had stopped, they saw many Pokémon come out, and he then realised that he may battle some of those. As they walked, he looked around tentatively, checking to see if anything was going to perform a sneak attack, and Cassie looked at him, before laughing.

“Oh don't worry, they won't attack you for nothing. Look at them all, they're playing together nicely,” She chuckled to him, trying to keep composure. Fred still wasn't sure though; he got the feeling that something would happen. Growlithe on the other hand was enjoying the walk; ready for anything to happen. They came to a stop, and Cassie released her Pokémon from the ball.

“Right. This is Oddish. This will be helping you in battle if needed. Now see that Pokémon over there? Attack it. Then you'll be battling,” Cassie advised Fred as her Oddish came out of the ball, releasing a nice smelling pollen that seemed to attract Pokémon. Out of nowhere, many Pokémon arrived, and began smelling the pollen. Fred panicked, he got the feeling that if he attacked one, then they would all attack.

“Right… Growlithe, using Bite on that Pidgey over there!” He yelled, and Growlithe nodded, before chasing down a Pidgey and locking it's jaws into it, causing pain. Cassie smiled as she saw the first attack; it showed that Growlithe was a strong Pokémon. Fred's fears were quickly dismissed as the other Pokémon were too distracted by the beautifully scented pollen that the Oddish continued to release. The Pidgey however wasn't, and retaliated by beginning to charge at Growlithe.

“Okay, now dodge the attack and hit it with another Bite!” Fred ordered, which Growlithe took in. It took a leap to the side, dodging the charging Pidgey before attacking it from behind, again locking it's jaws into it, finishing it off. They had won their first battle together, and Fred smiled back at Cassie, who smiled back. Growlithe ran over to Fred, and jumped on him with excitement; happy to have won. Fred laughed as Growlithe jumped on him, stroking his fur.

“Nice one, I suppose you don't need any more help?” Cassie said to Fred in a dark tone, seeming unhappy, whilst her Oddish stopped releasing the pollen. The teenager turned to face her, continuing to stroke his Pokémon. All the wild Pokémon that were drawn in by the pollen turned to face each other, before going back to what they were doing before.

“Not at all, I've still got places to go, and I think we make a good team. If there isn't a Gym Leader here, then I need to find another one. I'm sure you wouldn't want to miss the opportunity of travelling would you?” Fred asked Cassie, standing up, trying to convince her to come with him. She couldn't help but break into a smile.

“Of course I'll come; I didn't think you'd ask. I think it'd be a good idea to leave for Pewter in the morning, so until then, you can stay in the PokéCenter. I'm sure they'll have space in there for you”  Cassie said, seeming like she was relieved that he asked. She returned Oddish into the Pokéball before walking away from that spot, and Fred followed, with Growlithe closely behind. As she walked in front, Cassie smiled to herself; happy that she was getting what she always wanted, an adventure.

After a couple of minutes, the pair arrived back into Viridian, and from there they went their separate ways. They waved at each other before walking away from each other. Fred entered the PokéCenter, and walked up to the counter with Growlithe next to him. A nurse then turned to him, wearing all white. She had long, pink hair which came down past her shoulders.

“Hello, I'm Nurse Joy. I suppose you will be wanting to stay here for the night? If so, then we can also look after your Pokémon as well if you place it into your Pokéball,” The nurse asked him politely. Fred just nodded at her before returning Growlithe into the Pokéball, and passed it to her reluctantly. He looked behind the nurse, and saw a lot of equipment; he got the feeling that the resting process for Growlithe would be a sophisticated procedure. He felt unwilling to let someone else look after his Pokémon, but he knew it would be for the best. The nurse pointed towards the stairs on the right side of the building, and Fred walked in that direction. He was going to sleep; he needed to be ready to leave in the morning.

Meanwhile, Cassie had returned to her house, and was sitting down on her bed in her room. She placed her Pokéball on the draws next to it, and closed it. Something seemed to be bothering her, and it was hard to tell what was bothering her. She stood up, and walked towards the window, before staring out of it. It was pointing towards Pallet Town, and that's the direction in which she was staring in.

“I wonder what happened there… it seems to be bad, but I can't go down there yet if I'm going to travel with Fred. I hope he's okay though…” Cassie whispered to herself; concerned about Fred, and what happened to him. She got the feeling that he was hiding something from him; something dark and mysterious. She wanted to know exactly what happened then, and why it was making him so nervous and filled with apprehension.

“I'm sure he'll be fine… but I'll get it from him soon. I know I will…” Cassie sighed, whilst almost making a target. She closed the curtains and walked away from the window, before lying down on the bed, shutting her eyes, trying to sleep.

Fred couldn't sleep. He had been lying down on the bed for a while now, and had been constantly staring at the ceiling. He didn't want to think of anything, but he couldn't help it. All he could think about was that person. Who was it? Was it a man? Was it a woman? And why were they in Pallet? Those were the questions cycling around Fred's head, and he couldn't answer them, even though he wanted to. He just sighed heavily, before lying on his front, staring at his pillow, waiting for the hours to pass and the morning to arrive.
