Description I've been drawing leopards lately for a project related to the Asian comic I'm trying to put together. If all goes well, eventually I'll have a pretty violent (eep) and very short animation that shows off the fighting style of the Nilgiri langurs in the comic. At any rate, drew a bunch of realistic leopard heads for the short, but I can never resist throwing in a super cartoony version. I was happy with the lines, but I think the coloring job made the drawing look really generic. This really isn't the style I'm going for in the short (and it definitely isn't the style I'm thinking of for the comic), so, it's just a random rawry leopard head. I love how arched and round leopards can get when they are ticked off! I'm not too used to drawing big cats, so I'm still playing with the distinguishing characteristics between species.

Love the stylization. Reminds me of Sabor from Tarzan.

Woah, I love how expressive he is. The exaggeration of the opened mouth is awesome.
He reminds me of the jaguar, Sabor, in Tarzan.

Aw, man! I know from experience that leopards can be hard to draw. And, wow oh, wow! This one is designed beautifully! I love the whiskers. X) The more the better, I say!
Also, the face shapes looks good. It sticks to leopard anatomy at the same time as being beautifully stylized.

Oh man, I am totally struggling with them. But they are such beautiful, shapely cats, so I'm totally going to keep hacking at them until they come out a bit more leopardy. Thanks so much for the sweet comment and whisker appreciation. XD

As for more leopardy - anatomy wise, I think the character is great. I think it's the flat head that does it. So, I think it looks leopardy, and I'm having a hard time picturing something more leopardy. XD

I know, it deeply depresses me. :/ I think I've brought that statistic up two times in various locations of my page, and every time people react in surprise if they react at all.

It deeply depresses me too, they're one of my favorite animals. All we can do is help create awareness.

hmmm this si a beautiiful peice and i love how you have shown each step of the drawing from the picture to the lines to the finnished peice. i must say this took me forever to find somthing wrong with it.

ok this isn;t somthing really wrong wiht it but whatever.
the angle is different from the pic but i know you were trying to do that obviously so ther somthing you did good were able to take one picture in yur mind cartoonize it then change its ange and posistion.

now the neck is a bit long but over all it makes it look better beacuse it ephisziees the turning of its head *scrolls ack up* never mind the neck is purrfect and everything just at first glance it seemed long but GAAAAAAAAAAHh
this pic is annoying me i can't fnd somthing over all wrong with it.

but anyways this is a great picture and i cant wait to see the comic

Thanks so much! I'm glad you like the different stages of drawing. I'm a sucker for those. XD I think the neck is a bit long actually, or at least, connected to the shoulders oddly!

yeah it striked me a bit off but i wasn;t exactly sure how cause i have noticed in animated movies and cartoons and comic and stuffs liek tarzan they did have long necks

thornwolf [2008-07-05 01:02:30 +0000 UTC]

I like this, but I should warn that originally it looked very similar to the Tarzan leopard in general shape. I wonder if you can counter this by changing up the colors a bit, and I'm sure yours has a ton more personality than that one did, that one looked way psychotic and kinda..vacant in the eyes. This one looks more sentient.

wadifahtook In reply to thornwolf [2008-07-05 05:37:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think three or four people have said that! I agree with what you and others have said, that a color change, and a change to smaller or at least not-squarish spots would be a huge help, as I think it is more the coloring job than the line art that says "Tarzan leopard".

Kobb [2008-06-07 20:26:30 +0000 UTC]

"Generic?" Not too much. Though the spot style and he specific colors you used take my brain back to Sabor - perhaps that's tripping your familiarity alarm?

Regardless, this is awesome. Love the stylization and expressiveness, which is probably why I don't stray very far from cartoony (for good or ill) - it really is fun! Especially RAWR faces - managed to turn out a really fun one myself, the other day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wadifahtook In reply to Kobb [2008-06-07 21:11:08 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, it reminds me of the leopard from Tarzan in the colored version! But not the line version, which is so annoying. XD Is that who Sabor is? If so, I think it is the spots and colors, like you said.

Isn't it though? I get all methodical when I do realism, and am never happy with or moved by the finished product. Just gotta love cartoony.

I want to see your rawr face!
