Al is a relaxed and low-key type of trainer who takes things at her own speed and loves pokemon with all her heart. Since she's spent the last four years of her life before joining the league roughing it in the wilds with pokemon so she's very tough and resilient (Some would say ill-mannered). This has given her a knack for problem-solving and intuiting her ways through tough issues. Even though she can get through things this way her solutions can be pretty simplistic and only barely good enough to solve the issue.

Al is terrible at social interaction and will usually spurn it in favor of spending time with pokemon. She has a blunt straightforward way of speech with no subtlety or grace which often offends and hurts people unintentionally. Usually, if she has to introduce herself to a trainer and pokemon pair she will introduce herself to the pokemon first and then the trainer leading to them feeling as if she's trying to insult them. She is very distant to people even if she considers them friends.

Al can speak to humans and pokemon alike and can pick up on the emotions of pokemon- however, she's spent so much time around them that she is practically blind to non-verbal cues. To her, every conversation with people is very dry and emotionless and she only picks up on their feelings if they're spelled out to her in no unclear terms. It's easy to misinterpret this as being insensitive but she's really just incredibly dense.

Al's upbringing was an isolated one. Partly due to the small number of people who lived on Faehollow and partly due to the fact she could talk to pokemon. Her preference for the company of pokemon over humans meant she didn't make friends (There wasn't exactly an abundance of kids her age anyway), and her family was a little... too proud of her unusual ability. They turned her into somewhat of a public attraction. Who wouldn't pay for access to a pokemon translator service? Al wasn't too happy about this arrangement but it made money for her family so she could tolerate it as long as she got to interact with pokemon. Then one day her parents announced that they were going to move to Union City to make Al's translating business even more lucrative. There were loads of rich people there that would pay out the wazoo to know how their precious pokemon felt! While her parents were enamored with this idea the idea of leaving the quiet Faehollow and the pokemon on it she cared about terrified Al. She argued with her parents about it for days and finally, she walked out of her house at the age of 16.

Al settled down into a quiet life surrounded by pokemon, the one she'd always dreamed of and as far as she was concerned one she'd live for the rest of her life. She took care of injured pokemon, raised orphan hatchlings until they were independent enough to care for themselves, and watched over any pokemon that decided to linger around her. For years her way of life was a happy and simple one. Until she turned 20. One day a Purugly she had raised for since it was an egg showed up with an injured pokemon. She attempted to treat it but it was strangely violent and she struggled to communicate with it, and it passed away. She would have just thought of it as a sad anomaly but the Purugly began to act strange and cold. Then tragedy struck. The Purugly went wild and attacked her. The other pokemon she raised fought it but the new ferocity that had suddenly awakened in it led it to rip right through any pokemon that stood in its path. Eventually, it succumbed to its injuries but not until it was the last Pokemon standing.

Ironically she ended up going to Union City when she stumbled back home bleeding profusely and was sent to a hospital in the city to recover from her injuries. There she found out the reason for the tragedy that cut off her happy life. The shadow virus. Al was horrified to learn about such a thing that could warp a loving and kind pokemon into a shadow of its former self. But she also learned something that gave her a new purpose in the shambles of her old life. It could be cured. SHE could cure it. If she could learn how to heal pokemon infected by the shadow virus she could save pokemon from the fate that befell Purugly and maybe she could stop it from spreading altogether. Her ambitions were lofty but she was determined to stop the tragedy that befell her pokemon friends from ever happening again.
