Description Trying out a different style. Test brush from .
Reminds me of the Wizard of Earthsea.

~1 hour doodle between SAI and Photoshop 2. Was excited about getting a newer version of Photoshop, but too cowardly to touch it yet.* Will probably take all summer to learn it. (And even then, pen pressure is so temperamental...)

*A pet peeve of mine that few of y'all will bother to read about: Yes, it takes talent to paint anything with any medium, but don't forget to credit your paint programs. An amazing artist can make masterpieces with MS Paint, but if you've got Photoshop CS, or the latest version of OpenCanvas, or some version of SAI - remember, your artwork owes a shit ton to that program. I could not paint decent hair without a lot of effort before I received SAI. Moral of the story: you're not as talented as you think.

Love this effect. Β What's the test brush you used?

I got it from Enayla (Linda Bergkvist)'s site a long time ago, but I don't think it's available anymore. I lost it when I switched laptops and installed a newer version of Photoshop, unfortunately.Β

Tis beautiful~
Although you make a rather good point about art programs but it does take effort actually taking the effort to learn how to use 'em. And playing around can give you the advantage of always finding something new to play around with.

But I guess, to an extent, art programs do give everyone that edge.

Hm, I admit it does take time to learn to use a program. Thanks for the compliment (And also for reading my comment)! :>

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that, it takes a huge amount of talent to use your program properly and in a way that makes your art work as amazing as your work is. There is plenty of art out there made with programs like Photoshop and SAI, where it is obvious that the artist is not nearly as well-versed in digital editing as you (or any other good artist for that matter). So don't sell yourself short, because I've seen you paint with acrylic and it's just as good as any picture you've done with SAI. I also say this 'cause I suck at any program like SAI or Photoshop. lol. Onto complimenting the picture:

This is amazing. I love how translucent looking the man cape is, it actually reminds me of a fish, like mermaid-esque if that makes any sense. But I suppose that makes sense since he's standing on water. And the wispy birds make for good composition and motion, you did and awesome job. Oh and btw, I'm going to BU next year .

Haha, I'm just saying, it doesn't take much talent to learn a paint program. Particularly good brushes... all you do is click and download. 1)I highly doubt you suck at SAI or Photoshop (although I thought you used GIMP most of the time in any case). 2) After the initial learning bit, using brushes takes all of 3 minutes, and all you really need is to find and install good brushes... so it irritates me if anyone acts as if he or she could produce the same level of art with MS Paint and a mouse or whatever (am watching myself for arrogant feelings like that).

And CONGRATS!! **insert icons of confetti and joy** Hopefully we'll actually see each other this summer and during the coming semesters! Do you know what you want to study? (We can continue this in a note or something.) Wheee~

I see what you mean. Thanks! I'm not really sure, I got into the college of engineering, but I;m just now realizing that though I'm good at it, it will never incite the same passion that art does. So I'm a bit confused as of now, because I'm wary of switching to the college of fine arts for fear of not having a job. Ugh. I could go on and on about how undecided I am, but I think I summed it up pretty well.

Is there any chance you'd have time later to take some classes in the college of fine arts?
(And I didn't know you had a knack for engineering! How interesting )

It's a bit early for you to worry about job seeking. T___T

Haha I guess you're right about the whole job seeking thing. I mean technically I can always go back to school and study fine arts, but the problem is having money, right now I have full tuition, but only for four years. After that I'm all on my own unless I can find more scholarships. So I'm trying to plan optimally now.

Don't short-sell yourself. It takes a great effort to learn the programs well enough to produce the artwork. Your ability to comprehend the thousands of components needed to produce that certain texture you want through Photoshop CS or OpenCanvas is talent. This is yet again a lovely piece. It resembles watercolor so completely that I would never have know you used a program to create it unless I read your description.

Hmmm, to an extent. I'm just responding to a feeling of artists' arrogance... or maybe mostly my perception of things. There are a lot of cool textures and things on Photoshop, for instance, that take 3 seconds to use after you master the basics of using or even obtaining those brushes. The watercolor effect = product of program standard features and a good brush. Simply put, I think it's important to recognize that a lot of this visually pleasing stuff takes so little effort after the initial learning bit that it's not fair to forget how much the program does for the artwork.

Thanks for looking (and reading).
