I have this image and not from you. How can users say they own the copyright to vintage and antique photos on DeviantArt? It amazes me. These are PUBLIC DOMAIN and the copyrights have expired on almost all of these vinatge images who users claim ownership/control right to.
Will someone please explain this?

People who provide vintage images as stock here on this site don't really seem to understand that these images are in the Public Domain where no copyright restrictions apply meaning they can be used in their original form and don't have to be altered. This is why I make all my vintage photos Public Domain (even photos that are dated prior to 1923 since their original copyright is inapplicable) to be freely used by anyone for anything and everything either in their original form or modified. As for crediting and notifying the original collector, this is courtesy. Now, comes the situation where two or more people own a copy of the same photo. That's expected, especially of cabinet cards since some shots were mass produced. Therefore, no one has the right to claim ownership over these images. They are merely the collectors.
There is a huge misunderstanding about how Public Domain works on this site, and even though I state in the description of my vintage stock that all my vintage photos are copyright free, I still receive notes from time to time where people ask me whether or not they can use my images in their original form. Of course they can; they're Public Domain!
