VigilantMeadow — The Puppetmaster

Description This is my first major project with oil pastels (second time ever using them). This was my final for my surrealism project in my art class and I had the idea of a "puppet" being controlled by a "master" that is actually herself. Basically, the puppet is the person who we show to the world, all prettied-up and unnatural. The puppetmaster, on the other hand, is our true self, the one we keep hidden from the rest of the world.
I first sketched this when I was into drawing really creepy things and I loved the idea of having someone controlling a puppet with their own blood, so that's basically what's happening here.
I had lots of fun on this project and it took me a helluva lot of time, but I'm pretty satisfied with the results

Made with oil pastels.

Oil pastels are super fun because you can really blend the colors. Plus, you can scrape them off and basically start fresh if you really have to!
I like dry pastels a lot too though, but they're suuuuper messy!

I wish that I did...... They're so expensive and I don't want to go buy any.

Same. Here. I hate how art stuff is so pricey T.T

Yup... I mean, for people who are really serious about art as a career (or, more specifically, traditional art), then it makes sense. Or if they're people on here who sell commissions and prints and such. But for the amateur artist like me who is just doing it for fun...way too much money!

I'm planning on going into art, but I still dont' like dishing out all the money for the supplies. Which is why it's a good thing my family gets me the art supplies I ask for around christmas time. XD

Yeah, but aren't you planning on doing more digital art than traditional anyways?
And that's what I do too. That's how I got my colored pencils and my acrylics!

Yeah...but I love traditional art. There's only so much 'feel' you can get with the media in digital art, y'know. And I lied. I bought a 3 dollar set of 16 oil pastels two days ago. XD
Getting them as gifts is the best.

Oh gosh......get nice oil pastels. I know it sounds bad telling people to buy expensive things, but if you're going to use oil pastels, you have to use the nice ones! They blend so smoothly and the color is great. The cheap ones are more like crayons. ><

Lol, I'm fine with others for now. I'm not doing anything really serious.

Yeah, but it's just so much FUN to use good ones! I had a cheap set when I was little, so when I went to art class I was like "I don't like oil pastels." Then I tried the nice ones and was like "OH MY GOD I LOVE OIL PASTELS." Just my experience

I DON'T HAS MONEYS SO CHEAP WILL SUFFICE FOR NOW. And some people say it's not the quality of the utensils but how you use them. I hope it's true. XD

VigilantMeadow In reply to Black-Dragon93 [2012-08-06 02:18:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh haha, I don't actually have any. I used some when I was in my art class sophomore year. I'd like some, but I'll hold out getting some until I can afford a decent set. And I admit that the artist being good can make even crayon art look awesome, but an amateur like me ends up making scribbles while using ones that don't blend well. It's actually quite sad....not gonna post any of those pics, but it's sad. XD

I'm sure you could do something with low-quality. I BELIEVE IN YOU. And you've already said you didn't have any; you didn't have to reiterate. I remembered. I just wanna play with them a little thought because it's been years since i even touched them because i thought I didn't like them..XD

Haha, I don't believe in me... I haven't been doing art lately. And sorry, I didn't remember I'd already said I didn't have any. I forget things easily.

Wow, the idea presented is really intriguing if a little gruesome. And for your second time using oil pastels you got a lot of great detail in there. I especially love the liquidity I feel the congealed blood has. Wonderful.
