Description
this was for an assignment on beauty & repulsion
the lady on the left is based on a jungle queen butterfly, the skeleton lady on the right is based on the death’s head hawkmoth.
I originally had painted this in watercolor and then ended up getting really mad at it. Thankfully, having somehow anticipated that I was going to ruin it, I had scanned in the pencil lines, so I colored it again digitally (using my own textures/brushes) with a lot more success.

When I first saw this on tumblr it was mixed in with your His Dark Materials stuff, and I wondered if it was the Lady Salmakia and the Chevalier Tialys and some kind of sad pondering on the abrupt ends of gallivespian lives. Even though that doesn't appear to be the case this is still incredibly cool, the designs of the "clothes" in particular is just ugh wow

That is beautiful! And yes, Moths are bad omen to me. Once one came into our house. It was a big as a bat and well, death came into our home taking someone dear to me without notice... So you`ve depicted it just like I imagined it. But it is nevertheless scary to me... wonderfull!!!!

Moths are so much more wonderful than butterflies. It's sad that people prefer the sex-addicts over the actual pollinators! But what can you do. Like death, moths get a bad wrap. :') This is beautifully done though! Fantastic

The complaint about digital art losing the feel of the artist is very common! But I think a lot of people don't realize that there's a lot of places in between, and ways of retaining a traditional look. Creating art digitally is just another medium, and there's infinite ways of using it and personalizing it.
Also, I would say that this piece is practically half-traditional, since it was drawn in pencil and then all of the brushes and textures I used were from traditional media that I scanned.

beautiful it's a great concept - don't you hate that with traditional art? You make something awesome that you love and then you color it and fuck it up so then your efforts are wasted. I'm glad you got to save it with the digital fix.

I haven't been using the dA prints system on this account but I might soon if enough people are interested. I'll probably make a few prints of this and some other original stuff for conventions, I just never know how well that stuff does in comparison to fan art prints.

very lovely... funnily, I love fuzzy moths better than butterflys and have a deep set dear of women... so this image is rather reversed for me... or is it ho, ho, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder and one will invariably become the other given enough time. fun, fun, image.
