In Italy when we graduate from university it's tradition to wear a laurel wreath with a colored ribbon (red is a standard color I think, but other colors represent different degrees like medicine, engineering etc.). The wreath comes from ancient Greece culture (Apollo is represented wearing it), in particular from Olympic games, where the winners would wear a wreath made from wild olive-tree, symbol of victory and honor. Also poets wore it If I remember correctly.
And again, in ancient Rome the wreath was a symbol of martial victory, used to crown successful commanders ^_^
So it remained in our culture as a symbol of victory, used to reward students that finish their studies in university!
