“Magpie?”
Syrren stirred. This was odd. Familiar, but not immediately. She tried to kick her mind into action.
Looking up at the speaker, it clicked.
“Cy- Cyclone?” she replied hoarsely. “What...”
“I was going to ask you the same thing. What on earth are you here for?” The Tropius regarded the Absol, lying dejected in the litter, with concern etched on his brow. “You said you’d never be back, and you should have stayed away!”
“H-help... Cyclone, i-it... h-happened again.” Her voice was broken, just as her mind felt. “But- I- I- It was- my- my fault!”
“What happened again? You don’t mean... someone else has been killed?” The leafy dinosaur tried to hide his obvious shock for the Absol’s sake, but didn’t quite succeed. He stepped forward and leaned his head down very close to hers, regarding the blood, scratches and grazes she was covered in. “Are you okay?”
“Hey Yasi, sorry to dampen the cheery mood here, but there’s a problem.” The Deino, Cyl, had leapt casually from the Tropius’ back, and made toward Nye and Zooka. “That one there,” he pointed with his stumpy paw, “doesn’t sound very healthy to me.”
Zooka leapt to attention, producing more razor leaves and brandishing them at the little blind dragon, not realising how redundant this action was.
“Stay back!” His voice was still wobbly.
“Hey, little dude. We’re here to pick your friend up, apparently. I’m not gonna take a bite outta him or anything. Yasi would kill me.” Cyl continued toward the pair, his black head tilted. “Come on, your friend there is barely breathing, what’s happened?”
“Good question.” Zooka pouted. “Ask Syrren.”
She seemed thoroughly disoriented. She looked from the newly arrived Tropius to Nye and then at Zooka.
“He’s... he’s alive?”
The Whimsicott just averted his gaze.
“No doubt. Barely, but yep, alive.” Cyl seemed rather breezy about the whole situation.
“Ah- I thought- I thought he-” Syrren leapt up and grabbed her old friend’s head, hugging it close to hers. “Cyclone! He’s alive! Thank god! I thought-” she broke off, tears bursting from her eyes.
The Tropius didn’t protest. He looked over her shoulder as she slightly strangled him at the two Cyl was by. The unconscious Vulpix did appeared to be bleeding heavily from his shoulder, though the gash was currently covered by a black, ragged cloth, in some attempt to stem the bleeding, he assumed. Judging from her reaction to the news that the poor creature was still alive, Magpie would not leave him here. This made things complicated.
“Come, let’s get you all out of here, Magpie. We’ll find help for your friend.” He paused, thoughtful. “I can probably get him out on my back, but I won’t be able to fly you all...”
Cyl looked annoyed. “When you said, can’t fly us all-”
“Yes. You’re walking, Cyl.”
“Damn.” He groaned slightly. It wasn’t going to be easy to get out of here again. “Where are we headed, anyway? We never made any specific plans earlier.”
“Cyl, just get the Vulpix, carefully. Up on my back, gently.”
“I guess... I’ll help...” Zooka couldn’t be bothered arguing. He’d been tossed a major lifesaver and he didn’t feel like making life harder. It was as bad as it needed be already.
Zooka helped the Deino worm under Nye’s limp form and steadied the bleeding body as Cyl straightened up.
“Eww, I’m getting blood all over me!” Cyl’s mouth turned up at the corners in disgust.
“Cyl! I thought I explained `tact` to you!” The Tropius glanced at the Absol still half-hugging him, who was now staring at the bloodied shape through crinkled eyes as she tried to blink back tears, and at the shocked and uncharacteristically silent Whimsicott. “They’re worried, don’t go mouthing off, okay?”
The Deino, blissfully unaware of how everyone had stared when he’d just spoken, just jerked his head in place of a shrug. The Vulpix was heavy and gross. A few days earlier, and he had the feeling Yasi would have just jumped at the chance at what Cyl regarded as a feast. He kept wondering how Yasi knew the mangy Absol, and why they were even back here, probably giving up their chance to get away from the jungle for good, all to save some half-dead fox that Yasi didn’t even know. Tact was the last thing on his mind.
Nonetheless, he shuffled awkwardly over to the dinosaur and with some assistance from the Whimsicott (who kept glancing over his shoulder at the Absol with some conflicted fear evident in his expression) got the Vulpix up on the kneeling Tropius’s back. He could tell without having to see it that there would be no room for him up there.
“Cyl. Can you-”
“Ugh, fine.” He knew what Yasi was going to ask.
“Go with Magpie. I can’t carry you both.” Yasi nudged Syrren in the shoulder quickly. “Are you going to be okay to get out of here? I can trust you to get out safely with Cyl?”
She shook her head breifly, shaking off the dizzy shock as best she could, turning her eyes away from Nye’s limp body.
“I- I can try...”
“Hey sister, you gotta be more focused than that. This place is a hellhole at the best of times, but with Tivoli rampagin’ and everyone in the place suddenly insane-”
“The cello is gone.” Syrren looked up at Yasi once more. “We stole it for Devonshire.”
“What?!” Yasi had to reign in his reaction for the sake of the injured body now laid on his back. “Well, that explains... a lot... but...”
“No time. Go.” She tried to catch eye contact with Zooka, who had jumped up next to the Vulpix and started following the conversation fairly obviously from there, but he quickly turned his attention back to Nye. “Zooka...” Her voice faltered a little. “You can help Cyclone. He’ll fly easier with a tailwind. Look after... him... please?”
Zooka quickly glanced at her face. She seemed sincere. He couldn’t work out what he felt right now, though, and he just wanted to get home and get things back to normal. “I... will.”
“Thank you.” Nearly losing her tentative grip on her current shaky form of composure, she steadied herself once more. “Cyclone, there are doctors in the village we live near. Just get him to Tao and we’ll find you there. Fly south, and look for snow.”
“Tao?” Cyl looked curious. “I heard a rumour there’s an ice beast there”
She nodded. “PK calls it `Sorbet`, I call it trouble. But enough on that thing. Cyclone, take Zooka, and get Nye... to safety. I’ll get there as quick as I can with- Cyl, is it?”
Cyl opened his mouth to respond, but Yasi cut across. “Yes, Cyl. You two should be able to escape, just be careful, okay? I don’t want to have to come back for you two.”
“Geez, Yasi. I can look after myself, okay, just scram!” He grinned suddenly. “Besides, I have a great incentive now. I want to meet the ice beast!”
Yasi simply rolled his eyes. “Alright. See you there.”
The sauropod spread his four large leaves and beat them hard, while Zooka steadied Nye to prevent him slipping off Yasi’s chocolate back. An unrealistically convenient updraft aided Yasi’s ascent and they crashed a little haphazardly through the trees, the Whimsicott struggling to ensure that Nye did not slip, then quickly muttering a vague direction to his new steed and summoning up a little more updraft for the unwieldy flier.
