I think it's disrespectful not to ask the artist first before posting their artwork elsewhere, but as long as you're alright with it then it's ok I suppose. u_u

And Bolton definitely counts. Guards are staff, although most of the people at Arkham who lost it are doctors.

I'm glad Bolton fits- I remembered the character and had to check his real name, then suddenly thought 'oh no'. But people who know these things are reassuring me!

True, very true! But of course, in the Nolan films, he was a Doctor there, so... swings and roundabouts, I guess.
It's lucky that continuity is pretty fast and loose in comics- I can get away with this stuff.
(Pssh, it is impossible to be too geeky for your own good- and I love the fact that anything I'm not sure about regarding characters will be solved for me in the comments!)

Actually, Crane's history has him as a member of staff in the comics (whilst teaching at Gotham University at the same time) and was head of the Asylum in Batman Begins.

I don't tend to take Begins as canon, since they couldn't pronounce Ra's' name right. (it's Raysh not razz, at least it was in the Animated Series...) but it always tends to depend on what canon you're following, I guess. I always tend to follow the Animated Series since it's what I grew up on, and developed a lot of backstory for characters who never really had them before, you know? 'Love that series...

Well, honestly, if you view Batman Begins in that light then technically Batman: The Animated Series isn't canonical either.
They're adaptations. Different universes from the comics.
They have their *own* canon to which they adhere to.
And besides, I *did* mention Scarecrow's history from the comics as well (to which Harley Quinn and Lock-Up also exist in post-BTAS).

We're pretty much saying the same thing: It just depends on what comic you go by. And indeed, which writer and artists, since they can make things change in small ways over time even if it's supposedly in the same continuity.

True, except there's a difference between following the source material, and following an adaptation of that source material.

Not necessarily. I follow both comics and the DCAU, they're somewhat their own continuities, but fit in with each other nicely in some other points (such as Harley Quinn's existence being explained relatively the same way). The Movies don't tend to fit in with the comics quite so much, so they become their own canon I think. But again, it's all left to the opinion of the person watching. It's a common discussion that there's no point in discussing, since we won't change one another's views and it's been discussed better elsewhere, I'm sure. For now I'll just shrug.

ACdraw In reply to pentharis [2011-07-27 20:37:24 +0000 UTC]
Except they don't.
The DCAU and the comics differ in a good number of ways.
They're great adaptations, which developed into their own universe in a spectacular way and helped influence the comics themselves, but they don't by any means blend together with each other in the way you're suggesting.
I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound... preachy, or arrogant or anything like that. But that part isn't an opinion.

pentharis In reply to ACdraw [2011-07-27 20:44:19 +0000 UTC]
Not necessarily suggesting that they blend. I'm just saying that the DCAU, the comics, and the movies all have their own continuities. Sometimes multiple continuities. The continuities I follow are the animated series and some of the comics (the ones I've had the fortune to get my paws on), while disregarding others (due to poor writing, redundancy, the fact that they're one-shots, lack of knowledge, whatever). I personally disregard the live-action movies (due to their nature of missing aspects I consider key, while others don't care quite so much about that). so each person sort of follows their own continuity. That's all I'm saying.
I know you don't mean to sound preachy or argumentative, but you sort of do. I keep trying to ease out of the argument and point out that we're trying to say essentially the same things with minor changes and just keep missing one another's points. Can we just shrug and call a truce? Pretty please? Arguments about comics and their likenesses are sort of depressing.
