Description

An itch in the dire’s nose was what pulled her from her sleep. Hazy and disoriented, the little pup pulled herself up in annoyance, her pink nose wrinkling at the unpleasant feeling. A quick scratch to her muzzle promptly eliminated the major problem. With her early morning crisis resolved, the reality of her situation dawned on her; she was alone. Illoreth squeezed out from her uncomfortable spot under the tree’s roots. Once on the surface, she shook her pelt to free the buckets of soil and dirt that clung to her small frame.  She had been left behind by the others, perhaps even intentionally dumped there. Was she really so unwanted? Was there something wrong with her that made her so undesirable?

Illoreth stood for a moment until an audible growl caught her attention; the young pup was hungry. The brown female realized that she hadn’t eaten in a few days, and consequences may be dire if she did not find anything to eat soon. Illoreth pushed her swarming thoughts aside, letting her hungry gut control her.

“Maybe,” She said to herself “Maybe there are some berries?”  Illoreth didn’t mind eating plants now and then, they were easy to find and served as a nice snack to fill the stomach. However, there was a problem in her plan. The woods around her were thick and provided little to no shrubs and bushes, only the occasional tall grass that grew by the riverside. With that option thrown from the table, she resorted to the only other way she could think of obtaining food.  She promptly shoved her nose to the ground, just as she had seen her mother and many others do. A quick sniff yielded no unusual scent. The pup padded along, nose to the dirt in hopes of picking up any sort of smell. The ground only smelled of dirt, trees, plants, and-! Illoreth stopped her padding; a familiar and exciting scent hit her nose. She knew this scent well: birds. The young Felvarg lifted her head in hopes to spot the prize. Turning her head, she spotted the flock of birds lazily picking in the river.

Illoreth wasted no time in hiding herself around the thick trees near her. If she had any hope of catching one of these feathery beasts, she needed follow through with what she had seen others do. Birds, she recalled, are quite tricky to catch. Her fellow pack members always made it look so easy. She racked her brain, trying to remember the most effective ways to hunt such prey. Cautiously and slowly, Illoreth moved herself into the tall grass by the river. Thankfully, the flock was too occupied with finding insects to notice the small brown pup.  The hunters of the pack would always stay so still, Illoreth often wondered how they could stay crouched for so long. Illoreth lowered her body while tucking her feet under her.

A bird must have heard the rustle of the grass and whipped its head to face Illoreth. Startled that her genius hiding place had been found out, she pounced. She threw herself as far as she could with her mouth wide open. The dire shut her eyes, expecting to fall into the rushing river with empty jaws. She quickly bit down and felt a mass of feathers against her tongue. Her eyes widened in surprise at the lucky catch. Illoreth stretched her legs out in front of her, stopping herself from falling face first into the cold water. The bird lay limp in her mouth, and the smell of meat wafted to her nose. The pup sprang out of the water, darting toward her tree root den. Illoreth smiled as big as she could, given the large fresh prey in her mouth.
