Description
Ive been recently looking at my old sketchbooks and I happen to stumble upon this design. And since I had nothing much to do this evening, I decided to write a bio for this thing. Enjoy
.
Please note!
this story is entirety fictional and this sketch is not even real. So do not try to use this a some sort of evidence that the tiger 1 was considered for modernisation!

Description:
The Tiger I heavy tank was one of the main tanks used during the course of WW2. Though its firepower and armour was quite good against contemporary ally tanks, the lack of moral, battlefield reliability and spare parts lead to these tanks being abandoned and scattered all across the conflict zones.
Most of the hulks were all salvaged and scrapped, however 113 examples were found in mint condition and thus was placed either in storage or as war trophies.
However, when the West German army was reformed in 1955, they found themselves lacking in secondary tanks that could be used for defending key assets whilst the main tank battalions move onwards. And thus, 81 of the tiger 1 tanks were pulled out of storage and were put into service as support tanks (56 of them were operational, whilst 25 were used as spares donors). They served in this unchanged configuration until 1962, where they were replaced by surplus m47 and m48 MBTs and subsequently sent into warm storage.
During 1972, a plan was put forward for a tank that would be able to support the upcoming Marder IFV and also provide direct artillery support for infantry. But due in part to budgetary reasons, the German army decided to use the existing tiger 1 hulls as the basis for this new vehicle.
First off, the tiger tanks were gutted and had their turrets modified to fit the British L7A3 105mm rifled gun; giving the tanks the capability to use nato standard HESH and also HEF rounds for dealing with fortifications.
The original Maybach HL230 engines were utterly useless by now and were replaced by a detuned V12 seen in the leopard 2 giving the tank a increased speed of 64 km/h.
Armour thickness wasn't increased. Instead, side skirts and ceramic platings were installed on the sides of the tanks giving them a better chance of surviving modern HEAT projectiles; ERA mountings were also fitted above the side.
Since the tanks weren't designed to deal with modern MBTs and attack aircraft, MILAN ATGMs and Stinger AAMs were installed into the tank.
Finally, the Tiger 1's received new electronic equipment such as high quality thermal imagery and night vision systems.
In total 43 or these tanks were rebuilt, the remaining tanks in storage were either sold for scrap or used as targets. The tanks were redesigned as Tiger 1 Mk.2s and were classified as ISVs.
The tanks would serve the German army well in the 21 years of service. Also having a brief deployment as UN aid during the Bosnian Crisis, serving as support for US M113s and British Warriors IFV.
All examples were decommissioned in 2000 and were placed into warm storage awaiting their fates.
(Hope everyone enjoyed this, took me a while to research real life information to help out with writing a story that fits with real life as much as possible.)
