The factory was founded in 1874 by Robert Sandford, the factory was initially built for the purpose of exporting dairy products to towns and cities as far away as London, In 1932 the building was sold to Cow and Gate and expanded significantly due to damages from the war. A few years later it was sold one last time to Dairy Crest who used it up until 1993 when a fire damaged the drying plant facility due to this and other issues the creamery was shut down and hundreds of jobs were lost.
