Description
In 1890, the Sodor and Mainland made another go at trying to build a bridge to the mainland. The Navy signed off on the this as the area was quiet and the bridge was designed to let naval vessels through. To facilitate movement, the S&M purchased two NBR C Class locomotives which were recently damaged and purchased cheap. The locomotives, named after a popular fireman and his wife, were called Winston and Britt. Both locomotives worked hard despite the lack of funds preventing maintenance and the S&M's humiliation when the bridge was destroyed. Post-closure, the S&M hired out its locomotives to the other railways and the W&S especially found the two C class locomotives excellent engines, especially in winter, and as the NWR was formed was on the verge of buying them.
The NWR found them excellent designs as well and unlike the other locomotives of the S&M ensured that the two were maintained with the other engines. By the 1960s, the two engines seemed to be poised to continue on until an examination revealed the two engines to have a variety of issues including a cracked firebox. Both were retired and sold to the Sodor Rail museum in 1962, the engines were kept in static display until restoration began in the 1980s. By 1991, Winston and Britt were fully repaired and running again on Sodor metals. Nowadays both are pleased at being able to run, even if its only for the musuem. Once or twice in a blue moon though they will perform a rescue of a broken down engine such as their rescue of Spencer in 2003.
