Description
This is the original, current, and unfortunately soon-to-be-former cover art for my bestselling first published book, Umbral Pilots , which I released on Storytellers Vault back in May 2023. Much of the procedurally generated artwork that I used in my STV publishing required quite a bit of editing work, but this one was so perfect right out the gate that I didn't have to do much other than add that glyph to his chest plate and do a little cleanup. I was going for a late 70s-early 80s space opera vibe for this one, and I think this piece really nails the mood I was going for. I love this cover.
The Umbral Pilots are a camp of Glass Walker Garou from the World of Darkness TTRPG Werewolf: the Apocalypse. While calling them "werewolf astronauts" is overly simplistic, it does communicate the general idea of what these dedicated explorers of outer space, the Deep Umbra, the Middle Umbra, the Hollow Earths, and even Etherspace, are like. They create massive Umbraships that breach the various dimensional and spatial barriers with their pilots and cargo, facilitating deep exploration in their quest to find a way to save Gaia, the world-spirit of the Earth and mother goddess to the Garou. Failing that, somewhere beyond the Deep Umbra, they can find other Gaias to either send help or provide an escape route when the Earth itself dies. I've been in love with this eccentric and esoteric camp since 1995. I mean come on, werewolf astronauts are automatically the coolest thing that could ever exist in WtA, IMHO. Anyway, Finally last year, I caved and wrote it, and have had the validation of finding it climb to be the #8 best selling Community Content Vault release of 2023.
In February 2024, the Vault is going to instigate a policy that books on the site can't have any artwork that involved any procedural generation tools, so I'll have to replace this cover and most (not all) of the interior artwork, so I have finally decided to preserve some of the art from the book on my DeviantArt.
