Based around the original Colt New Model Revolver Rifle, the Model 1872 was intended to fix the flaws of the New Model Rifle, namely the problem of chain fire (the entire cylinder firing at once). The Model 1872 and the Model 1873 Double-Action Army were both designed at the same time. Both were introduced and sold to the public in 1872. While the Model 1873 pistol took a year for the Union Army to officially adopt, the 1872 Rifle was adopted almost immediately. The army adopted a long rifle version of the 1872 and a carbine version, mainly for the cavalry. The long rifle version was popular with the Army for its high rate of fire and quick reload. A squad could easily provide enough firepower to equal a company. The main drawback was the high rate of fire it could achieve. Without decent logistics, soldiers could expend all their ammunition rather quickly. Even still, the Model 1872 was highly popular.
