It's true. Other artists make PokΓ©mon look so ugly. You , on the other hand, draw them beastly ( in a good way).Β

aye, I think I really only started getting good after some basic college training, which was...5 years ago?Β Still trying to find my "style", and get good within that.Β Its so hard because you see all these other artists AMAZING art, but they're all amazing in their own ways, I just don't know what I need to do to make mine more amazing.Β I can't incorperate all styles of amazing, because they all conflict with each other, so its trying to find my style and how to make it amazing.Β So confusing

twapa In reply to Wakerra [2013-11-07 22:40:02 +0000 UTC]
There are 2 approaches I use:
1. Just learn to draw with NO style. Study the way things look in life and try to draw "realistically" - you don't have to ACHIEVE photorealism (I never have!) just try to really get a grasp of how to construct shapes that exist in IRL 3D space on paper. There are tricks to this, and it's not hard to learn, just takes practice learning to see something and think about how to draw it.
2. draw in other people's styles for practice. Try mimicking all kinds of styles to see if you can deconstruct how the artist's achieved what they did. In the end, you may end up borrowing a few favorite features or techniques from them and recombining them into something of your own.
: )

I've already been doing this Β perhaps I'm just in that awkward stage of "where do I take my art from here?"Β I like the realism, a LOT of what I've been drawing lately is realistic pokemon(though that was during an 18 month hiatus, which I am slowly submitting weekly, so my gallery is still mostly old stuff atm), and I could say I've taken some techniques/styles from other artists, eventually crafting my own kind of style around that.Β I think I just get hung up that my art isn't ever as cool looking as other people's, but thats because other people's is their own style, and they all differ.Β They are amazing in their own, and I can't seem to compare to see if mine matches up, cause its different as well.Β if that makes any sense at all...
Basically, I can't tell if I'm good or not, because there is no set way to make art.Β A person can be good at realism, and a person can be good at cartooning.Β You can't compare cartoon to realism, because they are different styles, but how can you tell if something is good in cartoon, or realism, when you only have those two to compare to?Β Its kind of what I'm feeling:Β I want to improve, and I take ideas/techniques from other good artists to do such, but while working out my own style, I can't really tell if I'm improving like I'd want to, or where exactly to improve, because all the art I have to compare my stuff with is always so drastically different

It's good to seek critique and comment from other artists - others can see things about our art that we might be missing ourselves.
With art, the line between "good" and "not good enough" is purely subjective and it's going to change over time - but a lot of that has to do with how confidently you executed it in the first place. Some pieces I drew 5 years ago still hold up really well and I'm proud of those - while others are awkward and embarrassing. It doesn't mean that I was "not a good artist" back then, just that I had room for improvement in some areas.
Even the most amazing professional artists still have room to improve - and trust me, they FEEL IT keenly.
My ultimate advice is don't worry about making it "good" in an objective sense, just focus on small steps to improve one thing at a time. DRAW EVERY DAY. Draw ALL the time. Draw the same thing 100 times. Draw 100 different things from a list. Find ways to motivate yourself to draw a TON of stuff. Have fun with it and don't worry about where you're "going" with it - you can't force style, it's something that just happens along the way as you become a better and better artist. : )
