Woodland Youth Year V 🐣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
As this is my new woodland youth illustration, with each one I want to explore some thoughts with you guys that I believe are worth considering. I know this may be a different perspective but I'm not trying to make anyone feel ashamed but rather explain and provide something new to consider and maybe try for yourself, which is why I included a recipe for a vegan scrambled egg alternative if you swipe! 🌱⁣

For myself, being a vegan is more than just a diet and while eating plant based is a part of that, it's more of a consequence not the purpose. I see being a vegan as a⁣⁣ moral and ethical compass on how to treat animals with an understanding of respect and the idea that animals lives are not here only for us to use and take from or commodify.⁣
⁣⁣⁣
And this year I wanted to talk about chickens and eggs. And trust me, this was the hardest thing to give up when I first went plant based 3 years ago so I understand how difficult it can be. ⁣
⁣
Every year over 50 million chickens are killed in the food industry. Many of those death figures and calculations don't include the slaughter of newborn chicks that are male, which are usually thrown alive into an active grinder or are gassed as they won't produce eggs. The hens that are "saved" are then encaged in small enclosures or in "free range" hangers for their entire lives producing as many eggs as possible. They keep producing eggs until they are fatigued and then sent to slaughter. Hens naturally lay around 12 eggs per year while industry trained ones lay more than 200. This is physically draining and often produces defiencies that lead to problems and even death from strain. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
While typically good natured, Having a backyard coop still encourages hens to overproduce as when we steal their eggs for personal gain, chickens by nature will produce more to make up for the loss, which drains them of nutrients, mostly calcium, even in the shells which is why they often will then resort to eating their own eggs. ⁣And many backyard hens are obtained from breeders many of which are part of the industry that produce them on a mass scale.This perpetuates hens with physical ailments that live much shorter than what is an expected lifespan. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
There are also environmental factors to think about and how they are now considered to be not a health based food because of their high saturated cholesterol levels and the added hormones etc. but Instagram only lets me write so much and I'd rather focus on the animal cruelty more than anything! 🐔⁣⁣⁣

I know this is a lot to take in but I would implore us all to do research as I will also continue to do research as well and learn together! 💛⁣⁣⁣

I included a substitute recipe called "Tofu Scamble" that you could try out! And for nutrients, this has ⁣36 grams of protein compared to 12 grams in 2 eggs. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣As I know this is always the question I get asked most so I try to find meals and foods that get more than enough protein needed per day! ⁣⁣⁣You can find this on my Instagram page below!
