Description

I have this pathological need to draw my characters doing nothing important. XD I particularly love people at bus stops for some reason. I find “waiting” to be a really interesting thing to draw.

There’s just something really appealing to me about drawing characters going about average, daily life. I guess that’s why it’s called “slice of life” illustration. Haha!  So, to satisfy my neurotic need for boring subject matter, here’s Mouse and Cyrus at a little bus stop. :>

Yeah, I don't approve of smoking in real life, but this character is a pretty avid smoker. :T

I always love to see more Mouse. It's interesting, how much you can tell about a character from how they act in their down time.

I'm glad you like him! And yes, I feel like I learn more about my characters from imagining them in mundane situations than in really irregular ones. Like, you learn more about the specifics of their personality- like how they carry themselves and if they have any weird fidgets or quirks. Small expressions and body language and the like that's particular to them. It usually feels like they sort of develop themselves rather than me having to really consciously think about it. Which is nice. XD

love both drawing and description...I think the idea of drawing characters in a "slice of life"situation is so great, maybe because it makes them more I don't know, real? like you know exactly what you feel in that kind of situations so you can transmit the perfect feeling through the drawing... I love the colors and the fact that Mouse is looking back, like it really makes you wander what is he waiting for...lovely <3

Turtle-Arts In reply to justvrit [2015-01-28 21:26:30 +0000 UTC]

True that. I've always liked seeing when other people drawing their characters doing everyday things, because you're right it makes them feel more "real" in a way. Like, when you stop and think about a fictional character having to do boring things like going to buy milk or taking a package to the post office, or cleaning their house or whatever- It's nothing special, but it just makes them so much more endearing to me. Can't get enough of it. XD
As for what he's waiting for... who knows? lol! But I think he's looking back because he's reading one of the flyers... but mostly because I also kind of have this fascination with drawing characters facing away from the viewer. Not that I don't like drawing their faces, I just always think it's interesting when a character is turned away... maybe because my professors always told me "NO" whenever I would do that because they said it wasn't best for the image, so then I'd have to face them forward again. But now I'm a professional and I can stick it to the man and draw my characters from the back. XD

ahah I'm totally agree with you in the last part! Now you can do what you want! No, but seriously a character facing away is always intriguing, even when there's no a real reason sometimes, you always can came with different and great stories about them.
I've used to think a lot of my characters in their "story context" but right now I love to put them in normal, slice of life situations, because it  makes me think about how would they act...I don't know, at least it really helps me to get to know my characters more, like not to just limit them to the story universe.

Turtle-Arts In reply to justvrit [2015-01-29 04:14:03 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. :> I love to write my characters in average situations when I'm doing exploratory work, and drawing that way helps a lot too. So then they feel more like "complete" characters and it's easier to write them in their actual story situations because they've already sort of developed their own personalities and quirks on their own.

justvrit In reply to Turtle-Arts [2015-01-30 15:46:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes!! I think I've developed lot of interesting details in my characters personalities just doing that... sometimes even if is just for fun, you can get to create really good side stories too!!

Turtle-Arts In reply to justvrit [2015-01-30 17:36:38 +0000 UTC]

True that. Except sometimes I end up really liking the side stories but there's no way to sensibly put it in the actual story. XD

<: I've yet to see your characters in a modern setting ALSO I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND!! YOU CAN TELL A LOT ABOUT SOMEONE BY HOW THEY CHILLAX PATIENTLY (OR IMPATIENTLY)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Turtle-Arts In reply to Kuzumm [2015-01-28 21:14:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, technically Mouse isn't totally modern, but I think he's the most modern/real world of my OCs. Man, now that I think about it, I don't think I have any totally modern characters. XD
And yeah, I find I learn more about the characters when I draw/write them doing something mundane.

Kuzumm In reply to Turtle-Arts [2015-01-28 21:26:43 +0000 UTC]

XD We all have an ideal basis for our characters that fit our style. Modern is boring anyways pft! AND YEAH IT'S CRAZY HOW SOMETHING SO SIMPLE CAN BE SO DESCRIPTIVE. There's a meme where instead of drawing your characters emotions to "happy sad depressed" you draw their reactions to sentences like "Wanna see my third nipple" or "What would possess you to do something so stupid!" XD it's awesome.

Turtle-Arts In reply to Kuzumm [2015-01-28 21:42:42 +0000 UTC]

True that. Modern realism is boring. And I ain't no fine art life painter, so I say mix up those timelines all you want. XD

Omg, I want to do that meme. XD

I feel you. In my opinion even though a main character seems obvious my secondary charactesr tend to have funner personalities

Turtle-Arts In reply to Kuzumm [2015-02-02 03:52:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that is true sometimes.  In a lot of stories, the secondaries end up being my favorites. It's more rare for the actual main character to be my fave. At least in books.  Usually in movies I'll like the main character because they're given the most development. Since there's not as much time to spend on secondaries.
