My own inherent understanding was that the Dwarves had discovered and utilized a natural formation. Naturally being themselves, the Dwarves would have seena refined shape within the rough natural arch and slowly sculpted it into a bridge that looked slender and frail, but was strong and inherently stable. It would take the power of a Wizard to sunder; no lesser force would suffice.Β
That being said, there is more than one way to imagine things. Maybe there was Β Dwarven version of Roebling or Archimedes in Durin's band.Β
