Description Yet another Western art project.

This was for an assignment called "invisble menagerie", the goal was to create either a hybrid or normal animal and place it with a found object to represent a current concern or problem in the modern world. It also had to be made of packing tape, self-supporting, and hollow. ridiculous.

So... because i wanted to make a cool clear beast (and also because I'm majoring in Media), I tried to represent the fear of society as is generated by the media. I had a news radio station playing on the stereo, and the beast was crawling over the speaker.

In order to make such a sculpture (if one was insane enough to want to), you basically have to make 2 sculptures. The first one is either paper mache or things like stuffed toys and objects that create your form. THEN you must wrap the form entirely in saran wrap (I did mine in pieces--individual legs, head, arms (they're actually a guy on my floor's arms!), and tail, then put them together afterwards). After its covered in saran wrap, tape LAYERS upon LAYERS of packing tape until the outside is a hard shell of tape. Then cut the outside off, rip out your form, and patch up your clear tape-shell. Mine took about 8 rolls, but i knew people's who took around 25....

My first marked art proj in university! A lot of upper year students were complimenting me on it (which was a pretty big ego boost considering im not even majoring in art, as they are), and i got 86%!!!

Imresive, although I rarely use that kind of tape it's a bit slippy.
But still, well done

Oh man I looooove packing tape sculptures. there's something so ethereal about it when its done and it's texture is almost like ice. I always make sure to have a roll of packing tape on me when I do sculptures now because it's so useful.

Great form. Nicely done.
I have seen the work of Ryo Seheta on line and am blown away by his work, as with Mark Jenkins.
I want to try this but I have many questions such as:
Is it strong or fragile? Did you seal it?
is it weather resistant?. Please consider giving a tutorial.
Keep up the good work!

Hello after a very long delay... you'll probably read this and be like... wtf? but i seriously have not been on deviantart in over a year! Okay, so this was for an art project at college. I explained mostly how we did it in the descript:
You must make 2 sculptures. The first one is either paper mache or things like stuffed toys and objects that create your form. THEN you must wrap the form entirely in saran wrap (I did mine in pieces--individual legs, head, arms (they're actually my friend's arms wrapped in tape--i made him sit still!), and tail, then put them together afterwards). After its covered in saran wrap, tape LAYERS upon LAYERS of packing tape until the outside is a hard shell of tape. Then cut through the outside, rip out your form, and patch up your clear tape-shell. Mine took about 8 rolls, but i knew people's who took around 25.... I couldn't even tell you how many layers... probably 6? 8? I just kept wrapping till it felt right.

The strength really depends on how many layers you do, but the more layers, the less clear the final form is... so it's like a tradeoff: cooler looking, but more fragile, or more solid... and more solid.

I didn't risk it in the weather, but I would bet it would be as resistant as a roll of tape in a rainstorm--certainly waterproof! but i would bet the sun would warp and discolor it. Plus, it's SUPER light, and by its mere concept, it is almost destructable, certainly fragile, because it's hollow. Think of it like a massive, somewhat durable blown glass sculpture.

Does that help?

Symbolism is great when you don't get carried away with it and loose focus... which you didn't, so good job. It's well balanced on all sides, for sure.
