BEGINNINGS 1998 - 2001

Sometime in 1998, I began drawing character reference sketches in earnest, and DEAD END, BREAKDOWN, and WILDRIDER were penciled in quick succession for almost immediate icon-making. DEAD END’s helmet has always looked pretty odd to me and has accordingly been a bit tricky to capture in the proper perspective. Until I enlarged the icon size in 2001 and paid his helmet details increased attention, very few essential changes were made. This version of him (such as it is presented, anyway) should be consistent with his first TV appearance, in the second-season THE KEY TO VECTOR SIGMA, but the need for more work was all too evident right from the beginning.
SECOND WIND 2008 - 2012

It says something for the deterrent nature of DEAD END's head design that all the other individual Stunticons were updated toward the end of July 2007 and MENASOR toward the end of the year. I had intended to finish all the pre-movie characters by the end of 2007, but another few months went by before I got around to doing the same for him. I dreaded the job, and I discovered while capturing screen shots why I find his head such a pain to render: It was drawn all kinds of ways over the course of the TV series and actually merits quite a few alternate avatars (I believe the count I have goes all the way up to eight). It was only in the next to last attempt that I felt I could see anything like a really worthy result, and after effecting yet another size boost, I am very tempted to say the end of the road has finally come.
