TRDL 2013 Series, No. 20 - Iron Man vs. Conner [Assassin's Creed]This one was done for the Outcast Battle Royale competition, Round 03, pitting me against Vimes. My character is Iron Man (different armors each round) and his is Conner from the game Assassin's Creed. It seemed to me, since I was doing homage covers for this series, that I'd make reference not only to Tales of Suspense #44, but to the recurring theme in Iron Man comics back in the day: time travel. I set this piece in the 13 century, and built the cover around that concept. Had a blast on the background on this one, hopefully making up for the last round, where I had to keep it minimal due to time constraints. Wish me the lucks! UPDATE: As I completed this one early and sent it off, I didn't want to post it publicly here until the voting began. Unfortunately, things got realLifey and now voting has already closed. Fortunately, I made it to semi-finals, so it all worked out!

yep, found that out later... wasn't familiar with the game and when I hunted for some refs on google images using 'assassins creed conner' that reference came out incorrectly, so off I went to draw it. Whoops!

these Battle Royale battles are crazy, because there's no limit on the characters that can be chosen. Individual artists bring whatever character they choose to use, and we go at it in brackets. As you saw, in this piece, the challenge is to find some way of bringing disparite character themes together.
The jam that followed this one, which was submitted yesterday and will be published Monday, was even crazier: Iron Man vs. Flatman vs. Disney's Beast, as a three-way semi-final match. Nuts!

I know right. Much of what I do these days is good grrl pinup art, so I had to sneak it in there...
I wasn't familiar with the game from any personal playing experience, so I was oblivious to using the wrong guy. I just suggested over at Outcast that we might benefit from a thread with character reference links. I didn't see one this round, and really didn't know what to use, so I just made a [mistaken] assumption...

I think choosing to do cover homages this time might not have been a wise idea. I think some voters don't get how much work goes into it compared to just setting up your own scene. On the other hand, I'm doing it for the fun and challenge of it anyway. Hey, don't know if you know your legacy Iron Man comics, but if so, any requests on future covers to use (maybe 1, maybe 2, ha)
