If you have Amazon Instant, it's available to watch the entire series there. However, it's not available on Netflix, because Amazon wanted it first. Hulu has some of the recent episodes, but I don't recommend watching the recent ones, being season 3, until you see the rest of the series. So, there's always the "illegal" way...

Yeah, but I recommend Amazon Instant because it helps support the show. The DVD for the first season is on sale for $20 at Wal-Mart; second season...I suppose it's $30.

You're welcome! Glad you like it. I love the series is one big 80s art film.
Sadly, after the third episode of third season was released, it was announced that the series won't get a fourth season. But Fannibals are hoping that the series will be picked up by another network. Crossing my fingers for that, because I can't wait for them to adapt SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (once they can get the copyright to it from Lifetime Channel). Third season is on episode 6 now and we're getting closer to RED DRAGON/MANHUNTER half of the season; I can't wait!

Motherfuckin' RED DRAGON! First season is named after Italian meal preparation, second season is Japanese meal preparation, third season has names of Italian courses (by timing), then halfway...they turn into the poetry of William Blake about the Red Dragon/the Devil, because the serial killer Francis "The Tooth Fairy/Red Dragon" Dolarhyde takes over. Dolarhyde is far more (in)famous of a character -- this will be the THIRD adaptation of the book -- with SILENCE OF THE LAMBS's Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb. The series has rights to the books, RED DRAGON, HANNIBAL, and HANNIBAL RISING, but they don't have SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
The problem is that Lifetime Channel owns the copyright of the book, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, as they wanted for years and years to do a series called CLARICE. But they never got to do -- it's been in production hell for over 15 years -- and they refuse to let it go. The showrunner Bryan Fuller hoped that, in a few years/seasons, they could eventually get the rights. So far, nothing. This doesn't go well if the series is not cancelled. However, the first season do have tributes to the characters of Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb and his lover, Benjamin Raspail (the man with the head in the jar).
One thing I do love about this series is that there is no rape. Rape stories are forbidden in the series. And in our rape culture, this is a breath of fresh air. There were rumours that David Bowie was going to be cast Lecter's uncle (but nothing solid on that yet).

Interesting, I got the Idea that they were using Italian and Japanese names for their episode names but there not doing it for Silence of the lambs? :I
And I'm glad there's not going to be any rape to, and David Bowie's possibly going to be in it?

They can't help not getting the rights of SILENCE OF LAMBS. If you understand the film history of the franchise, you'll understand. No one thought SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was going to a success; it was a B-film that everyone -- directors, actors, producers dropped out of -- and barely got made. The film studio didn't have confidence in it and never bought the rights of the rest of the books. When the film had a tiny opening then, by word of mouth, rose from obscurity and was the first horror movie, since THE EXORCIST back in the 1970s, that completely took over the Oscars. Horror films, as a rule, are always overlooked at awards shows. With it's surprise success, another studio scrabbled for the rights of the other books, but another studio got it; those books were RED DRAGON and HANNIBAL. The book HANNIBAL RISING was forced upon writer Thomas Harris; basically, the film studio asked for another book and, if he didn't write it, the studio would be forced to and change the characters into something the writer didn't want. This is why HANNIBAL RISING of a failure of a book (as well a failure of a film). I hated this book (and the film). Ironically, however, when aspects of HANNIBAL RISING has been added to HANNIBAL series, I think it completely works and this surprised me. It boils down to is its execution. The execution of HANNIBAL series is beautiful.
I assure you that they are TRYING they're hardest to get the rights of SILENCE; the series does much to call back to the book. They just can't legally do it until Lifetime gives it up. This is also why HANNIBAL series hoped to go through four seasons and, within that time, find a way to get some type of an agreement with Lifetime. So far, no luck.

(thinks) I did see MANHUNTER (1986), which is an adaptation of RED DRAGON, in 1987ish, I believe. Then 1988 is when SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was released. I rewatched MANHUNTER, then read the books.

Season 2 and the first half of season 3 have HANNIBAL, such as the characters of Mason Verger, Margot Verger, Inspector Pazzi, the pigs, etc. The second half of season 3 is RED DRAGON.
SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, as I said before, they don't have the rights to. But Clarice Starling does appear as a main character in the book of HANNIBAL, therefore the series introduces a Clarice-like character by the name of "Miriam Lass."

Here's a behind-the-scenes tibit of the series. The first murder you see in the first episode is actually the first fledgling kill of the Great Red Dragon, who won't appear in the flesh until Season 3, Episode 8.

Well, basically, they had no further clues on that case, so it went cold. On reading behind-the-scenes things for the Red Dragon season, they'll be touch upon Dolarhyde's military, which no other adaptation has ever talked about. I think this explains why he just disappears for years. He killed the family in the first episode (which had almost none of his famous modus operandi), went off with the military, and returned for third season. That's my theory.

The significance of the wheelchair is different in the HANNIBAL NBC TV series, compared to MANHUNTER/RED DRAGON book/film adaptations. I rather not spoil the reasoning behind it, you have had read the book or seen the film adaptations of the MANHUNTER/RED DRAGON to understand it and how (and why) its meaning/purpose was altered for the TV series. Now that the "Red Dragon" arc has started in HANNIBAL NBC, it's unclear if the wheelchair will reappear.

Is the wheelchair significant because of how Mason dies in the end? of the Movie that is.

Are you skipping around? Don't skip around! Don't spoil yourself.
If you want me to spoil it, tell me so. However, I'm going to be vague, because I want you to find it out yourself. The cutting of Mason Verger's face (among other details) is in the book, HANNIBAL. The series will always follow the book more than the previous film adaptations; but they added the cannibalism of the nose was special to TV series and it becomes an important factor for Mason's motivations in the third season. Since Will takes on the thoughts and personality of the criminals due to his empathy, Mason is the exact same, but it is due to his apathy. Both mirror Hannibal.
Now, the endings of HANNIBAL film -- the endings of Mason and Clarice, specifically -- are not the endings from the book. The ending was changed for the film (for better or worse, depending on the viewer/reader). The series, however, to my great surprise, did (near dead on) the book ending, which I think is far creeper and far more violence, but extremely befitting and strangely satisfying.
While there is a wheelchair motif -- the series loves motifs with antlers, tree branches, mythological creatures, birds, feathers, snow, skulls, blood, pendulums, broken teacups, repeated lines, repeated shots, etc -- Mason's wheelchair has little to do with the burning wheelchair of RED DRAGON. The problem I cannot tell you WHY that is, because it will spoil major plot points, so I'm going to keep quiet until you get to the episodes in second season.

The gag reels are great. "MOTIVE! MOTIVE! I'M OUT!"
But it would be your choice if you want to watch the films. But the films will make you have knowledge to the future episodes and plots. I can tell you that the characters of Tobias Budge and Franklyn Froideveaux from the series are based to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS characters Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb and Benjamin Raspail. Since they're unable to use SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, they can make tributes to the book.

Franklyn wasn't bad at all. He just wanted to be more familiar with Hannibal, unaware that would disagree with the professionalism of their relationship of doctor and patient. I understand that. You pour out your heart to your psychologist and he remains indifferent; that's quite frustrating to people with gregarious personalities. The problem with Franklyn is that was DANGEROUS. He got to know dangerous people, namely serial killers, without realizing it until it was far too late. Poor Franklyn.
