"Young man," his deep voice echoed through the roomy classroom. "Do you have any idea where you are?"
I murmured something inaudible.
"What's that? Speak up now, boy. I'm a bit deaf."
"To be honest, I really don't." I really didn't. The class broke out withunesessary laughter. I zoned out while trying to figure out what was so damned funny. Did I have something on my face? Was my shirt buttoned incorrectly? My tie tied wrong? Mr. Hughes' booming voice broke my thoughs.
"Son, you're in History, classroom A103."
"I knew that," I murmured.
"Speak up, son. I toldja I'm a bit deaf." I felt my face get hot as 27 pairs of eyes pierced through me.
"I-I think this is where I need to be. I'm a new student."
"Oh!" he exclaimed. "What's your name, young man?"
"Uh, Landon."
"So you're Landon Marcus!" He clapped me on the back painfully. "Well, son, why don't you go sit in the back there by Finny Boy?" Mr. Hughes pointed to a boy who stood out from the rest of the class.

'Finny Boy' put his hand up, waved me over, and comically patted the seat next to him. I sat down and he immediately striked up a conversation.
