Whether it's her career or just trying to get through a crowd, Ji-U is determined to get it done. Even if she hears that one of her friends (or even strangers) need help, she'll hurry to their side. Because of this, she is deemed helpful. She won't hesitate to help and hates when people won't accept her offers. It's a given that she's very friendly and always open to make new friends. After all, it's terrible to alone in the show biz. Once you're friends with her, expect to always have fun (or at least laugh at her try to find something fun to do). She's incredibly fun-loving and hates being bored. On the downside, she's very hyper and can never sit still long enough to completely focus on something. She always has to be tapping her foot, bouncing her leg, or fumbling with her hands. She's always quite nosy and likes knowing what's happening, even if it doesn't involve her. Birth - 10 Born and raised in Chuncheon, South Korea, Ji-U lived an average life. Her mother worked an office job and her dad stayed at home to take care of her. Her mother wanted a prodigy child, and always pushed Ji-U to her limits daily with dancing and singing practice starting when she was five. Although the singing portion wasn't sailing, her dancing and determination to continued to improve. Because of her early exposure to cutesy song types, it held a huge place in her heart.11 - 16 When she was 11, her friends exposed her to rap and hip-hop. Ji-U was fascinated and took it up straight away. She started practicing her rapping and hip hop dancing behind the scenes. When her mother found out, she was enraged. She wanted a cute idol child, not a rapping misfit. She hammered down a new, heavier practice schedule in an attempt to keep Ji-U busy.
Ji-U showed as much interest as she normally did in her cutesy dancing, but she did seem a little more down as she continued on without her hip-hop practicing. Before it could start to affect her performances for her mum, she started practicing at night when her mum couldn't hear her. By the time she was 16, she was an heavily experienced in cutesy and her hip hop endeavors.
Her rapping surpassed the singing her mother wanted her to do. Though her singing greatly improved, her rapping took the cake. Because of this, she started up a YouTube channel that documented her progress. She got many hits, soon doing cutesy dance covers of multiple popular pop songs. Little did she know that her YouTube channel would lead to her career.17 - Now A representative of Moon Entertainment found Ji-U's YouTube and took a liking to her talents. He contacted her via e-mail and through video calls and chatting with her parents, an audition in Seoul was arranged to see her fullest potential. For the audition, she pulled off a routine she was working on for a video - it started out cutesy and turned hip-hop. Though her mother hated the second half, she soon accepted it upon finding out that the performance granted her a trainee spot there at the company for both her genres.
The rep stated that she needed work, but she had potential. Enough to get her trained. For the next two years, she called Seoul her home. Somewhere during that period, her mother gave Ji-U her stage name without even thinking: "You're like a coin; you have two completely different sides to your talents." After sprucing it up, she eventually named herself KOIN.
