Description I was asked to shoot a holiday photo to send out to all my hospital's clientele. This is the 1920x1080 HD version, and the other is made for a canvas print.

Lawrence Hospital Pathology Lab 2010. This lab is 24hrs, which makes a group photo near impossible. 80% of the lab is in this photo.

This photo is made up of 8 different photos all taken at different times. I took 4 of them, and frankly you can tell which ones I didn't take. The other 4 were taken outdoors, and it took some time to remove the cast shadows from the sun. The other issue is focal length. The day of the photoshoot it was raining hard outside, so we decided to shoot inside. With a group of people that cannot travel far from the lab I was forced to use my super-wide angle to get everyone in the shot (I didn't know ahead of time that I would be photo-shopping everyone into the photo). Anyone who has used a wide angle for portraits knows distortion is a huge factor. That was all that was running through my head as I was snapping away. Once I took the main photo, I took the 3 others at different times and made sure to use the same lens, settings, and distance from the subjects (with super-wide lenses the distortion varies with distance. A few feet can create a vastly different perspective).

This was done during Thanksgiving week.

Tools: My camera gear, 11-16mm tokina, cokin flash (bounce), manfrotto tripod, wireless remote.
Adobe Lightroom 3. I do all the WB, color corrections, exposure, etc in lightroom before importing everything into PS CS2. Once in CS2 it is just a matter of cutting, re-sizing everyone to normalize the group.

It far from good in my opinion. If given more time I would have liked to blend the group with the background a more, and use the ambient light from the christmas trees to light the group more naturally. Even though the flash was bounced it still creates a harsh light compared to the background.

This is easily my longest artist comment ever.
