Description Size comparison of large aquatic animals that lived between 65 million years ago and 1,8 million years ago.
Upper row: Macrodelphinus kelloggi (orca-sized cetacean with sawfish-like snout), Kutchicetus minimus (early, otter-like whale), Basilosaurus cetoides (giant, predatory whale, apex predator of early Tertiary seas), Protocetus atavus (one of the first fully aquatic whales), Enchodus ferox (large-fanged fish that survived Cretaceous extinction), Imagotaria downsi (primitive walrus) and Aulophyseter rionegrensis (early sperm whale).
Middle row: Dorudon atrox (smaller relative of Basilosaurus), Cetotherium mayeri (one of the first true baleen whales), Odobenocetops peruvianus (heavyset dolphin with walrus-like tusks), Rodhocetus balochistanensis (large legged whale with paddling feet), Eurhinodelphis longirostris (swordfish-like cetacean), Thalassocnus littolaris (semi-aquatic marine sloth related to ground sloths), Steller's Sea Cow (giant marine mammal related to manatees hunted to extinction in 18th century) and Prosqualodon australis (whale with crocodile-like jaws and one of the first to have a blowhole and a melon organ).
Lower row: Zygorhiza kochii (primitive whale with neck and elbow on it's flippers), Palaeophis casei (primitive, giant, marine boa), sabertooth salmon (large salmon with prominent teeth) and Carcharodon megalodon (gigantic relative of great white shark).
