Fred is a Nickel Plate Road H-6o USRA Light Mikado number 587 built in September of 1918 by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia Pennsylvania originally built for the Lake Erie and Western Railroad as number 5541 and later renumbered 587 in 1922 when the LE&W was bough by the New York Chicago & St Louis Railroad better knowed as the Nickel Plate Road he served the NKP on freight trains in Indiana until making his last run in 1953 before being retired in 1955 in that same year he was donated to the City of Indianapolis Indiana where he was put on display at Broad Ripple Park where he remained until 1983 when a group of volunteers called "Friends of 587" removed him from the park and took him to Amtrak's shops in Beech Grove Indiana for restoration to operating condition for use in excursion service and soon enough on August 1988 Fred moved under his own power for the first time in 34 years and on September 17th he pulled his first excursion from Indianapolis to Logansport Indiana through the next 15 years Fred was operated by the Indiana Transportation Museum or ITM and he was considered their main attraction in 1989 one year after being restored he made a triple header with Jane (N&W 611) and Roanoke (N&W 1218) during that year's National Railway Historical Society Convention in 1993 he made a double header with Andrew (NKP 765) from Fort Wayne Indiana to Chicago Illinois for that year's NRHS convention after Norfolk Southern ended their steam program in 1994 he remained operational on the ITM and he was primary used on their fair train from Fishers Indiana to the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis in 2000 he made an appearance in his own movie "Old 587 The Great Train Robbery" after the film he continued operating until 2002 when he made his last runs on the ITM before being taken out of service in January 2003 to undergo his FRA mandated 15 year inspection and overhaul however on 2016 his overhaul came to a screeching halt when the ITM lost a battle against the City of Noblesville Indiana two years later on June 28 2018 a court told the ITM that they had until July 12 to vacate their location or else anything that was left would be scrapped but thankfully the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation made a deal with ITM to move Fred to Ravenna Kentucky where he would be stored until a plan was made and he soon moved to Ravenna on July 7 he remained stored in Ravenna until 2019 when he was purchased by the Chicago New & Pacific Railroad better knowed as the New River Road for restoration to operating condition for use in excursion service aswell as some occasional revenue freights he was soon moved from Ravenna Kentucky to NRR's shops in his home of Indianapolis where his restoration begin and he is still undergoing full restoration to operating condition and he'll be back very soon
