Description I'm doing a "bettering myself" project where I try to fill in all my apparent portfolio holes. This is for the class Senior Project, but I planned on doing it anyway. Hopefully by the end of the semester I can finish these six pieces, spending a good amount of time on each one, to complete my portfolio.

Projects:

1. Movement (this one)
2. Creature Design
3. Architecture and Perspective
4. Vehicle Design
5. Environment/Cityscape
6. Lighting and Interior
7. Character Interaction

I spent about 6 days on this painting. At first the composition was unclear, but I like how it turned out. These are two galdori (sorcerers) from my online RPG, Thorns: Uprising .

Very nice movement indeed. You're project list is a good idea. I'm making portfolio too. Maybe I should think like you. Great job here.

This looks gorgeous! Everything about it! It is a lot more dynamic than most of your usual pieces.
To imply more movement, I think you could also make the clothes a bit more 'flyway'? I don't quite know how to explain it.
I really love that hand of hers. It really brings the piece to the next supernatural level! xD

I'm glad to see that your monitor discoveries haven't made your paintings any less vibrant. :3 The lighting is wonderful and I really admire your ability to make it both fantastic (meaning its elements of fantasy) and realistic in style.

I love how the clouds are sort of flowing off of the woman and because of that I can see her being the more powerful of the two even though she's actually smaller in the picture plane.
Also I like how the woman stands out more colour-wise while the man seems to mirror the clouds' colour in the top of the plane.

Well done. I can definitely see an improvement, and I like the composition.

One thing that bugs me, though, is that the light from her hands doesn't seem to be reflected at all in the folds of his robe/cape/thing-he-wears. Even just a little bit of it would really help out, especially since you put that blue in other parts of his outfit, and in his face.

Otherwise, well done. Did I also say I wish I could paint like that? No? Well I do. There. I said it.

I originally had it reflected, but it really made the fabric look too much like silk. I know jack about how light reflects off dense fabric.. should probably do a setup to see. Thanks

Also, I'm taking painting 101 this semester. OH THE SHAME. I do get a chance to use those oils, so thanks for letting me borrow them

shingworks In reply to thundercake [2009-01-21 15:18:02 +0000 UTC]

For dense fabric or matte materials, reflected lighting should be really close to the base color. On shiny stuff the lighting should veer closer to whatever the color you're reflecting and with darker shadows... like on a plastic cup the lighting will be just a bit lighter than the base plastic color but on a golden goblet you'll get strong whites and blacks?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

thundercake In reply to shingworks [2009-01-21 16:35:09 +0000 UTC]

So for this fabric, I had a sort of dense wool and then a shiny velor. For the velor I picked out little dots of reflected light for the (bristles?) and the dense wool I just reflected with a lighter red. I agree with him, it doesn't look quite right to me, but I don't know what would have worked

I did, but I ended up having to use acrylic most of the time. But I'm looking forward to it this year...should be fun. This class is in Painting and Printmaking so I'm not expecting to make many friends, but the teacher is really friendly.

You shoulda told me you needed Acrylics; I have a boatload of spare tubes at my house collecting dust too.

Same with watercolours, actually.

My use of ONE color you mean

rofl, ah yes. but see, purple is win. it takes over and consumes all.

see, you used like one color, but its a rich variety of it. i try to do that and i end up with a block of boring.

Awesome! Though you could also cross off the interaction one off your list XD The magic on her hand reminds me very much of the way *questionstar hilights things (which is the ultimate compliment in case you are unaware). Love the costume design and atmosphere too.

Oop, one thing that could be better resolved, the dark fold in her dress on the bottom sort of gets lost since the saturation is the same on that as on the guy's cloak. Maybe could be darker to make it get pushed back more?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

thundercake In reply to shingworks [2009-01-20 20:49:57 +0000 UTC]

I originally planned this for interaction and movement, but the characters aren't actually touching and I think I could do something a bit more intimate. I have a nice idea in mind.

Also, it has long been my dream to be compared to questionstar, so squeee.

I think I will go darker there, you're right, it really blends. Might also border that red hem with silver but that could be overloading.
