This reminds me of the Boeing Vertol XCH-62, which got cancelled by Congress before it could fly. Β The XCH-62 would only have been about the weight/payload of the Mi-26, however.
Rumor has it that some senior US military officers were chagrined that the Soviet Army had the world's most powerful helicopters....
