Pinnochia always dreamed of being truly human instead of just an automaton. Boomers could think, feel, breath and bleed just like humans can, why couldn't she have freedom too?
Another common theme in Anime is Man and Machine. The fight between man and machine, and blurring the line between a created product and a living, thinking being. Movies like Ghost in the Shell and Bubblegum Crisis feature (and are based around) this theme, along with many others. When does a machine, with thoughts and feelings of its own, stop being a machine and start being a person in its own right...
