Description I started this drawing at work during my lunch break. I had found an old National Geographic magazine with an ancient sailboat on the cover. It was called the Sohar. This ship was important because it was sailed by the legendary Arab explorer and merchant Sinbad. In 1980 a British explorer decided to recreate Sinbad's ship and attempt a 6,000-mile voyage. According to the article, a team of sailors and shipwrights built a replica of the Sohar using traditional manufacturing methods.

What I found most interesting about this event was that no nails or metal fasteners were used in the construction. According to the article, the Arab sailors at the time believed there were great magnets in the ocean that would suck the nails right out of their boat and doom them to a watery grave. To combat this, they made ropes woven from coconut husks and tied the entire frame of the boat together.

For this drawing, I a mechanical pencil to sketch out the form and define details. I used 3-4 B pencils for the shading. I then used blending stumps and erasers to add texture. Finally, I used my phone to edit the image and darken the shading even more. Overall it took me over 6 hours to complete.
