Description 4x4 inches, watercolor

Sometimes I just want to draw a dragon with a classic look. And then I go paint a wyvern. This little creature was one of the sketches I made when preparing for the griffmunk painting, I'll probably finish at least a couple more of those as well!

Because the original sketches were intended as spot illustrations for my website, I threw in a personal requirement to design the watercolor in such a way that it would easily convert into a transparent image that would look decent on any shade of background color. Well, "easy" it was not, but it was definitely possible. Took about an hour of cleanup to get rid of all the things that would look funky on a dark background and still have it look good on white, but it's there now and I've developed some good techniques for the next one!

Thank you!

It can be tricky to make watercolors that can turn into a good transparent image for the internet or other uses, like spot illustrations that people want to place over parchment textures and such. It's a fun skill to be working on, though!

So pretty! So...wonderfully prickly! I really love the way the flame trails into white and blue.

Thank you! I was looking up stuff about smoke colors and I found out that (at least in wood smoke) white smoke is most often produced by escaping steam, and it made sense to me that there would be a lot of steam in any smoke a dragon breathed out. Black smoke has a lot of carbon in it, and when the white steam and the black/brown carbon-smoke mix in the air it kind of refracts a bluish color because of the way it scatters light. It's fun stuff!
