Description Brighton was built at Brighton Works, the place he was named after, in June of 1899 as a LB&SCR Billinton E4 Class locomotive for local passenger and freight services. He was powerful for his size and was a stalwart of local passenger, freight and branch work for more than fifty years. In 1909, Brighton was rebuilt by D. E. Marsh to have a better performance, featuring a bigger and larger boiler. During World War I, Brighton, alongside several other E4's, were borrowed by the Railway Operating Division and were shipped to Audruicq, France. After serving for the War, Brighton and his siblings were returned to Britain in 1919 and returned to regular service. Brighton made it to Grouping in 1923, being part of the Southern Railway, and continued on regular mixed-traffic duties. On May 7th, 1955, Brighton was withdrawn from service by British Railways and sold for scrap. However, in September of 1960, Brighton was preserved by the newly formed Bluebell Railway and returned to service on December 25th of the same year in LB&SCR Improved Green. In 1997, the North Western Railway Company purchased Brighton for use as a mixed-traffic engine on the Harwick Line.
