Description "Come now, stop that whimpering," Nikolai's father said tersely.

"B-but they'll make fun of me," Nikolai whispered, looking down and drawing his blanket closer around him.

"And if they do, you just make them stop. It's easy. You just have to be tough, don't show any weakness. It's the weakness they'll poke fun at, not the eye patch."

"They always say such mean things..."

"Nikolai, listen to me. Stop dwelling on it. You're only going to make yourself feel worse. Stop crying, you'll upset the eye further."

Nikolai tried to hold back the tears that stung in his eyes, feeling his cheeks flush in shame. He wanted to be big and tough and strong like his father wanted him to be. He wanted it more than almost anything else in the world. But time and time again he kept on failing. At his age, he was supposed to be out helping on the farm, but instead he was always cooped up indoors, sick with one stupid disease or another. His body just couldn't keep up with the demands.

"That's right. Cheer up, yeah? The doctor says your eye will heal with time and you should be back to normal in no time. Maybe by then you can help out a bit more, hmm? Stay away from those angry old wild puckoo this time though. " his father said, doing his 'trying to be encouraging' voice. "You were lucky that rooster didn't tear your eye right out of your head."

Nikolai felt his stomach turn at the thought. He just thought the big grey and black puckoo was hurt. It was laying on its side, kicking up dirt and twitching. He had just wanted to help. But as he found out, it was just taking what's called a 'dust bath,' and he had gotten too close to the puckoo's womenfolk, so he attacked. Viciously. Went straight for Nikolai's face, scratching awfully over his left eye. Nikolai remembered screaming in pain as he fell backwards, holding his eye as it stung so bad that tears and blood ran between his fingers in equal measure. Luckily someone was nearby and rushed him back to his parents, who in turn quickly took him to Dr. F, but it still horrified him to think that if that furious rooster had hit just a little lower... he could have gone blind in that eye. The doctor even said so. Luckily instead he just had some nasty scratches around his eye socket, and the eye itself was damaged badly as well, but Dr. F said that he was young enough that it should heal over perfectly and he'll never even notice later on, especially with the assistance of the light magic healing he administered.

In the meantime, though the scratches around his eye had healed very well--as the doctor had predicted, the scar fading away to nothing--his eye still bothered him. He could see, yes, but it was still blurry. Another thing the doctor and his parents kept telling him would go away with time, and if not, could easily be corrected with glasses, but the blurriness wasn't what worried him. It was the pain.

Every time his eye was exposed to too much light, it made his eye ache like he was looking directly at the sun. They said that the eye would take a little longer to heal than the eyelid. His eye had been hurt badly, but the doctor's magic should have fixed anything long-term. He hoped it was true. He hoped someday he would be able to take this stupid eye patch off and go outside without it half blinding him, and without his eye protesting its absence.

Nikolai sighed and looked up at his father, trying to glean a hint of tenderness in his stern eyes. "Do I really have to?"

"Yes, Nikolai," his father pressed. "You have to go to that winter party with the rest of the family. Just ignore your cousins if they say anything about your eye. And if you decide to start telling stories, make sure it's a little less... pathetic than getting spurred by a puckoo? Can you do that? Say you got in a fight with a spite and won or something. You'll gain their respect then. Or just keep your mouth shut. Whatever works."

Nikolai cast his eyes downward once again, feeling a blush on his cheeks once more, remembering instances of his fantastical storytelling and clumsy disasters, embarrassing his father and making his own life miserable in turn. "I'll keep quiet, father," Nikolai muttered.

"Speak up and enunciate when you talk, boy. Remember that."

"Yes sir."

"Good boy. Now go see if your mother needs any help with your little siblings. The youngest is out of the pouch and already causing trouble," his father sighed, rolling his eyes.

"Yes sir," Nikolai repeated, slipping out of his blanket and walking out of the room, head down.

TL;DR - Niko gets a lecture from his dad about not being so wimpy. Reason being, Niko got attacked by an angry wild puckoo and nearly got his eye torn out, and now he's self-conscious about the eye patch he has to wear as the eye finishes healing. The tense relationship between Niko and his father is revealed.

In every verse I have Nikolai in, he gets this eye wound one way or another (usually at the claws of some big angry bird). Doesn't really have scarring around his eye, but his eye is always pretty messed up after, resulting in injury-induced heterochromia and severe light sensitivity. Naturally I can't bring the heterochromia into wyngro (if I could, his injured eye would be a lighter brown, kind of yellow-ish. References with descriptions here: sta.sh/22bqj29mfstc ), so instead he's just keeping the eye patch with a bit of light sensitivity, and of course his eyes are staying the same color. He's not blind or anything, and he can see almost normally, just only in low light. When he goes outside or to bright places, he wears the eye patch to help alleviate the pain.

Also, Niko's favorite color is creamsicle orange. Not quite the exact color the blanket is, but close. I couldn't find my color reference. 8'D

Also, fun fact I guess? Nikolai's full name is Nikolai Iain MacVicar, named after his father Iain MacVicar. There's a whole ton of history/reasoning/meaning behind those names, but they don't carry over to Wyngro verse very well because most of it is IRL/human stuff, so... I guess there are their names just because. XD Iain is a bit of a meanie, as you can see. His harsh, "manly" way of doing things doesn't mesh well with Niko's much more sensitive ways, leading them to butt heads like this a lot. Deep down Iain does it out of love for his son, trying to push and encourage him to be the best he can be, but he's not very smooth when it comes to executing that intention, coming off as a bit more abusive than loving. Nevertheless, one of Niko's goals in life is to make his father proud, so he's always pushing himself beyond his limits to do so. Iain DOES notice these things and appreciates them, but he's awful at expressing that. He MEANS "Amazing! You did so well! I bet you could do even better next time!" but instead it usually it comes across as "You can do better next time" full stop. Blunt, and not so encouraging at all. It's a rocky relationship for sure.

Almost done with his upgrades! WOOOO
