Description
Like my last deviation, this is completely copied and pasted from my post on the official Mochi Raptors Amino. Reaper is running a Draw To Adopt for a double King-Trait Wing-Trait character, so I decided to toss in a couple of entries myself. I apologize for odd formatting!

The writing is a continuation of my last DTA entry seen here: aminoapps.com/p/4nb7uu0 on Amino (or in my last deviation for ya’ll DeviantArtists)

A hushed breeze ran along the waterway, gently brushing across the steady surface. Firm trunks and strong roots, long having been knocked over in some forgotten storm gust, took hold in the submerged muck, where floating driftwood and fallen lichen were easily took up in the soft current.
Cedar, oak, and pine weaved simple, sparse refuges of land and root cover, streams always steadily washing away at the taps. Grass and moss grew and floated with the illusion of more foot space, where a few ducks and snake took hide. Soft sounds, all so delicate, created a quiver just before the first frogs began to sing and the crickets began to howl their ear splitting symphony.
A sudden shift caused ripples to disrupt the surface, sourcing from a slow moving form, maybe even just a shape floating, not swimming, with little accord of where it’s going.
The form, not easily mistakable for a log due to its purple color, shifted once more, possibly becoming unsatisfied on where they were floating to. Hyacinth, this form lazing in the water, had grown a lot since she’d first been taken to Cypress Trail. Many months have passed since the last great storm, and in those days a lot has happened. Orchid, her caregiver, had been well scolded for bringing back another mouth instead of prey, but she had been welcomed in on the condition that someone would be coming back for her.
It had taken weeks for the flooding to lower enough for any land raptor to safely cross, and even then the debris had made traversing the swamp especially dangerous. Even now, she’s been told that the waters just weren’t the same.
After some weeks, an unfamiliar raptor had made visits and spoke to both Orchid and Amos, the swamp’s pack leader. Conversation had sparked up every few weeks until the visits eventually stopped, and Hyacinth had been told she’d be safest here.
She’d only been named afterwards. Halfways after her caregiver — it somewhat being common for family name themes to conjoin among her pack, therefore Orchid and Hyacinth — and halfways for hyacinth’s purple color and star-like clusters. She’d often been called storm or starlight beforehand, almost in a disdainful way. Treatment of an outsider.
It didn’t bother her any, especially now that she had been deemed old enough, or just big enough, to swim alone. She’d grown to almost twice the size of her peers in half the time, majority of the other ‘pups’ her age only able to swim along the main canal. Gators were a big problem, prey of raptors just as much as raptors were prey to them, but she’d been told that so long as she was watchful it would be rare for a young alligator to take up such a big trouble.
Considering how majority of her ‘packmates’ treated her, and the simple privilege of the pack leader scooting around a few rules for the large youth, the time alone was highly appreciated.
With a swift movement, she spread her wings into the water, catching along the current and folding aside, pretty efficiently turning herself around to swim against the pull. Using both her legs and wings to propel herself, she moved with a speed she took pride in. Hyacinth knew many raptors couldn’t traverse waterways in general, especially ones lacking aquatic traits, and it was rare to find even a fish who enjoyed swimming against the flow.
It made her feel strong, taking under the water before leaping out, only to splash back in with a spray leaching behind her stretched wings.
It was a shame to be treated like an outsider in the only home she could really remember, many of her peers aloof or simply ignoring her. She wanted to be able to show off to someone other than herself, she guessed. The other pups had been able to do so; everyone just treated her like it should simply be easier due to her stature, or outright look at her like she was a creature to be feared. Neither were inherently true. Her wings helped her no more than a fin would, and her frill and streamers always got in the way, tangled up, or caught on a log. Sure, she was larger than her nestmates, but she was still a raptor. Still a part of the pack.
This only caused her to take longer strokes across the canal, not keeping much eye on the trees.
A sudden weight was thrown at her side, something around her size and feeling like twice her weight thumped into her with a growl. This, of course, pushed her under a little bit. Flipped her around, causing her to throw herself up and out of the waves with a gasp. She pulled out a growl, doing her best to whip around to face whatever pulled her down.
“Haven’t I told you to pay more attention out here? You may be big, but you’re still sloppy about righting yourself.”
A voice chirped jokingly, loud but in a soft manner. Bull-like horns stuck out from a surfacing head, bright white eyes and a smooth smile resting on it.
Hyacinth sputtered a little, before a friendly smile widened and she flung out a wing to smack Orchid right in his snout.
”Yeah, you have.”
She snarled with a hoot, her frill spreading a smidge at one of the only raptors who treated her like she was wanted. Amos only interacted with her as much as was required, and raptors like Mallard were just nice to everyone, but Orchid actually made a little effort to watch out for Hyacinth.
”What are you going out here?”
”Making sure you haven’t been eaten or something… It’s nearly nesting time, you’ve been out here for quite a while…”
Some concern bleed into his words, still smiling that soft smile as he paddled only as need to keep afloat. He was aware of how his packmates treated ‘his pup,’ and was honestly worried for her. Sorry for how things had gone, and just wanted the best for the little flower.
”Hows about we make the way home together?”

My second entry for Reaper’s 2KtWt DTA!
The MAIN characters mentioned are [WingsDTA / Hyacinth : aminoapps.com/p/xgmulok ] and [ Orchid : toyhou.se/6664722.orchid ]. Orchid lives in my swamp pack, Cypress Trail — it’s basically a VERY large marsh/swamp with the main waterway being called ‘the cypress trail.’ Pack just took the name — and I decided to use a cool idea I had a while back, where a wing trait (because they can’t fly) would use their wings to swim better!
The drawing has taken around six hours all together? Posted the WIP half way into that because I had no clue how long it would take, lol.
I have realized I absolutely adore drawing swamps. There’s just so much to detail, and then again so little you actually have to pay attention to. A mesh of blue and green, kinda clumpy, kinda stringy, and a LOT to do with contrast. So many similar colors can look muddy, so I HIGHLY recommend getting a good set of grays if you ever get into markers.
Completely saved the lighting on this image.
Scenes like this are very new to me, but I think I’m getting the hang of it 💕💕💕
The star aspect was actually in the flower chosen for the DTA’s name in this story, also pictured in the foreground of the scene.
Hyacinth’s are a pretty cluster of star-shaped flowers, often representing sorrow, sincerity, and sport. I tried to represent this in multiple ways in both the writing and image. ✨
